Here we are with both corners knocked off

Now that I have a Workmate, I can use this high-tech neck shaping jig

Now for a real mystery, I somehow managed to take all the following pictures and NOT include my spokeshave and 4 in 1 rasp . Gotta be a conspiracy here!

Now tell me, what's up with that? . At least when I was trying out my new scraper, I managed to get a shot of it

Now a little smoothing with 120 grit

And after all that (and a bit more), only the dog (Tippy btw) with the bad attitude notices .

#2 son was going to setup a profile here whenever he decides to build his dream bass.........................He may take a little convincing now

The neck is 'shaping' up nicely!! How thick to you plan on leaving it?

When I bought this curly maple (it has some birdseye here and there) for neck stock I had it planed a little over 13/16". Now I like a fat neck, and it is a 12-string, so for now I'm leaving it at 3/4 at the first fret and right at 13/16 at the 13th fret. Since I'm using mostly Tru-Oil on the neck it won't be much of a trick should I choose to thin it a little after I've played it and seen what it can stand. As it's a 25" scale I'm using 10-46s as the main strings and aim at tuning it to a normal 440 hertz range. At the end of the day it will still be thick, but I'm going to sneak up on it slowly . I ain't building no ricky here

Dave

Edit- BTW, those measurements were not including the fretboard

You know me, if there's an "analog" solution, I don't even bother with digital . I even put it back in to thin the neck some (it was a warclub ), I've just yet to post updated pics (got the body polished too, and haven't posted that either ). I had a backlog of sorts on necks so I've been busy there too (between job hunting ). Thanks for checking in Glenn . Oh by the way, I know your in a Gretsch mind and all, but before you get out of your current mahogany/setneck phase of builds, have you considered an LP JR, or Special? As much as I love a Tele Jr, I've seen a lot of them lately. A good ole LP JR single cut (my fave) would be refreshing. Anddddd, if your spooling up to wind pups like everyone else is, a single P90 isn't a bad way to get your feet wet

Dave, I think you should know that we've all figured out that when JP Turbo had to lay off his crew of little people before he finished, you were kind-hearted enough to hire 'em on in your shop. You don't have to hide them. It's OK, it's not the challenge any more, you're legal, and besides, we'd like to see the little buggers again. Except for that one that talks backwards and upside down. He needs to larn some Ainglish.

These are the followup pics where I thinned down the neck to a more usable profile. As you can see, the transitions are much more prominent, and overall a more pleasing, fat "C" shape neck

Ahhh yes, I'm much happier now

As I said before, I've got a pretty long backlog of necks but I'm only doing a couple before I finish the 12-string. I'll do the rest later .
I pretty much rushed over the neck build on the 12 without showing much of my process so I'm going to show this one to give a little flavor to the mix .
This is an experimental neck for me, I'm using Aspen wood for the first time (with mixed results) and it's my first try at a laminated fretboard (baked, curly maple). The baking also, being a first for me. I'll show followup pics on the fretboard once it's fretted (I'm doing the 12-string and it at the same time). I'd read a lot about aspen, and most of it seems to be true. It's pretty stiff but quite ugly (much like most poplar). Luckily, it's getting a satin black finish, to mitigate the "Uggghh" factor

Without further ado or comment, here you are

There ya' go, nothin' to it

Yep easy peasy. But I gotta recommend the $12 microplane over the rasp. I have that same rasp and the microplane outperforms it, no comparison really. Like an AMC Gremlin against a Aston Martin DB9, like a Howitzer tank against a clown on a tricycle, like a veggie burger against a T-bone steak, like a worm against a bald eagle, like a...right nevermind you get the point.

Let's see some pics of that polished body...the guitar body that is .
