Rimu Build

Found a plank of rimu that had been tucked away in the garage for a while, took it to a joiner who kindly cut into it and glued up a two piece blank for me.

It started out at 45mm, but was a bit twisted. After thicknessing and sanding I'm left with a touch over 40mm, also not the lightest, so I'm guessing a thinline is the way this will go. I'll gladly take suggestions on cap wood options, though also wondering about the possibility of chambering from the back since the grain is starting to grow on me.

Cheers, Will

Hey man, always good to see a fellow Kiwi builder on here. My first build was a Rimu thinline tele, I ended up using a maple neck with a pine stripe continuing down the body for a bit of contrast.

Rimu is a beautiful timber though, I would love to see you preserve those looks with a rear chamber. Maybe a beech cap on the back, with some elements of it carried over to the top (a pickguard, or an inlay). I'll definitely be following this one!

If I were you, I'd be on the lookout for some demo timber. There's gonna be a lot of church bits and things from historic buildings around in Christchurch now. A great opportunity, not only in wood supply, but in recycling and preserving some of the history of the city. Also would make a great conversation piece if you can get some provenance as to where your top came from.

There's a dude on who is often on TM selling church bits at the moment. Local to you of course. Search under matai or Kauri (I notice he doesn't have any listings right now tho). Any of the demo places round town will be starting to have a glut of quality pieces on their hands.

No more noble way to recycle than to use it to make music.

Rewarewa is so damn hard to come by, especially in the South Island. Not that I'm having any better luck in Wellington.

I keep an eye on Sallies and St VDP for bits of furniture. No luck as yet.

Looks like there are a few of us NZer's here!

One of the best places I've been to recently is Halswell Timber, they have a lot of stuff. I bought some macrocarpa to go on some mahogany for the next build I'm planning.

Agree with Boysie, beech is a nice looking wood, a few places around Ch-ch have it.
