I've built strat out of BYO 'licensed strat kit'. (they gave me a tele neck in it)))) Sent a strat neck after complain with excuses. Body and neck were from Mighty Mite. I really happy with the result (considering better quality pups, tuners and tremolo i got for it). No idea about their own woods, sorry.

Take a drive to Exotic Woods in Burlington. You should be able to get a swamp ash body blank for under 75 bucks. And they usually have the weights marked on the edge so you know how heavy the blank is that you're buying. I don't generally buy pre-planed and glued-up body blanks but I was in there a while ago and found a couple that were just a touch over 3 pounds each so I bought them.
