Hey Herb,

It's in the mail. You should have it by Monday at the latest. How is the pickup going?

Hey , thanks again Barncaster .
I am still waiting on the steel base plate and the alinco 3's from Mojotone , I have 43 awg and flat works , wax , string , that reminds me , gotta pick up some Ritt black dye and dye the string black .
Do you know off hand how many wraps are on that Black Rope of yours ? I would think probably between 8000 - 9000 ?
As soon as my parts get here from mojotone I'll be winding.

Hey Herb,

Aaron put 9600 scattered turns of 43 gauge wire on it. It also has A3 mags. The reading came out to 9.7 on the meter. I think the Fender Custom Shop Snakehead pickups were wound to about 9.4 which I believe was the approximate reading on the original. In the pine body with the big neck the tone is just incredible. Aaron makes an incredible pickup. The White Rope set I bought from him is in the surf green Tele on the wall in my video. That guitar is a MONSTER!

Thanks for the info Barncaster , that'll give me a bench mark for my winding .
I have heard nothing but good things about Aaron's pickups , quite a few folks here use them , if I didn't get into winding which is a blast I would definately look at them.

A quick check and final run over with some 320 grit , it's pretty nice out today , I think I can get some vinyl sealer on this today

Just messing around this morning I took some Mixol #1 black and mixed with a few onces of warm water , took some of my cotton twine for wrapping coils and dipped it in the mix for a few minutes , I'll use this for wrapping the coil once I get it wound , my parts did ship from Mojotone so I should have them in a few days.

Hung the dyed twine over the door to dry

I used one of the Pyramids in my pine Esquire with the lap steel pickup. Like it. The wow factor goes with the Zenith. Nice and skanky looking but soundwise, that remains to be seen. You get the pick of the litter. Let me know which one you want.

And old amp dudes say stripe end to ground is quieter in circuits. I don't know if that holds for guitars though.

Good on you, Barncaster.

Fun thread, great read and awesome work! Looking forward to seeing the finished guitar!

Now I must go sand. I hate sanding.

Got some sealer on the body , I'll give it a few more coats , then it'll hang for a few days , get level sanded and then primer .

Maybe I'm weird but one of my favorite parts of the build is wet sanding the finish , I just find it relaxing , but I do hate sanding mdf when making templates .

Dude, I check this thread at least 3 times a day. I can't believe you started this project the same day I started mine. I didn't even build my own body and neck, let alone hardware, and you're still three times further along than I am.

Funny , I was commenting to your thread at the same time you were commenting on mine.
It seems like this one is going fast , but believe me , I am putting in a lot of time on this , I look back to when I started and think , boy , it really hasn't been very long but then I think of the weekends and week nights I worked on this , I probably have more time in on this build than any other I've done. Also all the helpful advice and drawings and templates and parts folks are sending , has sped things along too , its really unbelievable , and appreciated .
After a few builds you kinda get a rhythm to it and you just flow from one step to the next , at least I find I do.

I level sanded the body this morning and it's back outside with another coat of sealer on it , 2 more light coats today and that'll be it for sealer , then I'll start with color.
In the meantime I got the nut roughed out , After fitting in the slot I marked for the string locations and started the cuts with a .010 gauged saw , then I started the slots with the appropriate sized nut files and polished just a touch , I'll leave it like this until final setup

Just started the slots with the .010 guaged saw

After nut files and a bit of polishing

That should be good for the vinyl sealer , I'll let this sit a day or 2 and sand it lightly again , then wait on the weather and start with some color.

Herb, it's really coming along nicely - looks like you'll have a finish on it shortly; can't wait to see it completed! The neck has turned out incredibly well - are you nervous at all about not having a truss?

Hey mojo , thanks man , nervous about no truss rod , yes and no , I hope it will be fine , we'll see after its been in tension for a few days , the nice thing about making it yourself is you can always make another and you are only out cost of material , which in this case is maybe $5.00.
I am really most curious about how it will sound , that thick neck with a 9.5k pup with the 43 awg wire, no truss rod and a sub 4 lbs pine body , after hearing Barncaster's I am pretty excited , hopefully I can get something close

It'll work..........unless you move to tropical Florida or sub-Saharan Arizona, in which case IT/neck will move

Very nice!
