Single Action Truss Rod Question.

I've been searching threads for the last hour and I haven't been able to find an answer to the following.

I'm in the middle of my first vintage style truss rod installation and it's going pretty well. It's a heel adjust design and I have the adjustment nut cut, drilled and tapped. The anchor is threaded into place and peened. I'm down to cutting the rod to length.

The adjustment nut is just under 1.00" long and it's bored to .750" and tapped as far as I could go.

My question: Of the .750" bore, how much should be left for adjustment. In this pic you can see where I approximated the cut and where the end of the bore is in the nut. Is there a general rule for how much adjustment should be available?

I usually leave about 1/4-3/8" of thread exposed. It's not critical as long as you dont leave too much that it bottoms out on the nut.

Thanks Shepherd. I appreciate the quick response.

So, to confirm, is this what you're saying?

From this picture it looks to me like you would be making the rod too long. Looks like you'd have about 1/2 in of thread exposed. I'd probably cut it about a 1/4 in. shorter and thread about an inch of the rod.

I just make it so that the threads on the rod will be .20" to .30" into the adjustment nut when the adjustment nut is fully seated in the heel - just like that picture above:

That has worked with stainless steel, 1018 and 12L14 steel rods with a 12L14 steel nut for me. My favorite steel for truss rods in 12L14 currently as I can get the threads straight/symmetric. I try to get the threads straight on the rod - seems to be important part of the equation as well.
