need a (fat!) neck for a MIM body
Im building a partsOcaster Esquire using a MIM 60s RI body and I need a neck. Id like to get the fattest MIM available. Im leaning towards rosewood but maple is OK.
So far the ones im considering are a James Burton neck (U-shaped), and I read the classic players 50s esquire are pretty fat. If im gonna go warmoth route its gonna be rosewood as I cant be arsed to finish a maple neck. (I would tru oil the rosewood back) Specs I like are 7.25-10 (9.5 is best), vintage -medium frets (medium is best)21 frets. Dont care about nut width.

I tried out a GE Smith Tele and it was a "deep U", but I can't imagine the neck come up for sale all that often.
![]() It and the James Burton are pricey, for production Teles. I say go the custom route and get the exact specs you want: SS frets, for example.

Plenty of choice on Warmoth (or USACG) then, expecially if you mean $300 unfinished.

thing is I dont have time to finish it. Im doing 12 hour clinicals so Id rather have something I can just bolt on and go. I can instal a pre-cut nut but finishing Id rather not. I could do tru oil though thats pretty easy. I figure a rosewood neck all you do is tru oil the headstcok and back...easy.

Medium frets 1" at the 1st and 12th fret Chunky C profile Last one I bought was $115 or $120 Accepts vintage gotoh tuners Needs finished in your choice of finish. I think TDPRI member kokotele is an Allparts dealer. |

That is a price he says for the $125ish for unfinished, but you can buy finished in nitro ones for around $200. You'll have to get it nutted, but you'd still be well under your price range and they are VERY NICE.
Also, if you keep your eye on warmoth in-stock necks, you can find some great fatties finished in satin or gloss nitro with nuts all ready to go for under $300 and they are GREAT necks. They have 2 really fat options - Fatback (full C shape) and Boatnecks (fat V shape) I have a number of both and LOVE them. The only necks I play are Warmoth and Allparts TMO Fat...best necks around for the money, IMO. |

TMO-fat is a beast of a neck! I just put my tele together with one and I have to admit that I was afraid I wouldn't be able to adjust to it but after a day, I have no problems at all with it. I'm used to v shaped necks (JD tele and Eric Clapton sig) so it a a little getting use to. The frets are great and very playable even without a fret level job. I'm very impressed with the neck and btw I got it from Eric at kokotele. Super easy to finish also. I wanted a big fat neck and a light swamp ash body hoping that mix will get a guitar that resonates really well. In this instance, it turned out well and I'm really happy. Give Eric a call, he will do you right!

Cool! I really dont like C shape (although I do like my CVC neck), I pefer U and the few Vs Ive played were very nice. Its weird I didnt think Id like a soft V because I like U so much but for some reason I do. So the Allparts Boatneck is a soft V, thats what I want.
Fat vs Thin, I prefer fat but the shape is more important I think. I have a 52RI and a CIJ52 Micawbre, both U shaped but the 52RI is a lot fatter. Love them both. Quote:

The neck fits the pocket size and are Fender spec, yes, but it's not pre-drilled, so you will have to drill mounting holes. Just be aware. They also come with a empty nut shelf, so be prepared to do a little precision work or bring it in to a tech for all that stuff

another voice for the TMO-FAT. I used it on my partscaster. It had a few high frets and definitely needed a fret level (THANKS! RON KIRN, for the FRET LEVEL THREAD!)
But, now, after playing on that nice fat neck, it has kind of spoiled me for thin necks...I really love it! |

That being said, for your price range, you'd be able to take it to a tech for that work and still be way under your budget. Or, keep an eye on Warmoth for one of their fat necks finished and you can have them install and slot a nut for a little upcharge... all of their necks come with the holes drilled (unless you do a made to order and tell them not to). You could go after one of their exotic woods that don't need a finish...just an option. I might also suggest buying a Warmoth unfinished neck, select a nut install, and then go to your local gun shop, buy some Tru-Oil and read one of many posts on here for the simple application of Tru oil. About half of my guitars are Tru-Oil on raw wood and they are my absolute favorite necks now. Saved TONS of money one Nitro finishes and time (since nitro takes several weeks to cure). It's a fast, simple process and the results speak for themselves...there are hundreds of TDPRI'ers that swear by oil and I am one of them. Have done bodies and necks and the results are amazing. There is also some glory in doing things myself. I like having someone do stuff for me when it's something I can't or won't, but this is so easy even I could do it well :-) |
