formby's tung oil?
so has anyone used formby's tung oil on a guitar? if so do you have pics? I have seen some posts where people say not to use pure tung oil as it never cures, but i have also seen stuff where people use it (not tru oil) and claim to have good results. whats the deal with it? after applying can it be cleared over?

It is a polymerized oil of some sort, not pure tung oil at all. It is essentially a very thin polyurethane finish.
It can be rubbed on for a close to the wood type finish and left that way. Or for a high sheen it can be repeated several times to get a build. I am not sure about it on a guitar, what type of wood? |

I have quite a bit of experience with Formbys Tung Oil. It is basically a thin wiping varnish, and it will go over any kind of stain you want to use, and after it has dried, you can apply clear over top of it.
You can wipe 20 coats on, and it wont ever make a nice hard finish like Tru Oil or clear coats of lacquer or poly. I use it on pistol grips and some furniture type stuff to accent the wood, protect it from being bare, and still allow the grain to show through naturally. It also works good to wipe on your existing furniture to brighten it up a bit and keep dust from sticking to it. Because its a polymerized/catalyzed finish, it does help "pop" the grain. I wouldn't use it as a stand alone finish on a guitar, but it is a nice easy to wipe on and cleap up finish.
