Neck Finish Question
Guys,
I have a unfinished maple neck that I want to end up looking like this... ![]() Being a complete rookie at finishing I was wondering how to get there from here in the correct steps. Keep in mind, the only finishing I've ever done is stain and wax on top, so if there are other products involved, let me know :) Thanks! |

tint then clear
Unfinished maple varies in color.
If the maple already has a yellowish color to it, then just apply 9 or so coats of clear lacquer. If the maple is lacking in color, spray light coats of amber tint until you are satisfied with the color, then apply the clear coats over that. If you are using a preval or you own spray gun, you can mix a little amber dye with clear lacquer for the first few coats and get your yellowish hue without having to apply a separate tint coat. good luck - and take your time.

Behlens Fruitwood tinted lacquer in aerosol gives a pretty nice amber tone. When using tinted lacquer, if you get it too dark, you can wipe it off with acetone and start over.

Thanks guys. I appreciate the help. My neck doesn't have much color at all so it needs a little tint. If I went the tint route with clear after that, is the tint the stuff they sell ar stew mac?
I'll google the Behlens to read up a little. Thanks again. |

try woodcraft retail outlet
I think you can buy this stuff right off the shelf at woodcraft.
The Canton store has a dozen different flavors or so of the Behlens. You could call your local (sterling heights) store and ask. Be careful though, don't bring your checkbook or credit cards to the store. just bring enough for the can of lacquer. - you'll thank me later.

My mom got me a $50 Woodcraft gift card for Christmas once and I walked in with that and asked where there under $50 section was and they laughed at me.

I got a 15$ off coupon for 75$ PURCHASE OR MORE at woodcraft. Then when you look at all the exceptions, the coupon is basically worthless.

I get coupons for woodcraft all the time...I've only ever used one or two. Once it was $20 off any purchase...I walked out with enough maple to build 4 necks, a chunk of nice walnut for stripes/markers for countless necks and a chunk of mahogany that I used to plug up the trem cavity on a strat body. I was only about $7 out of pocket.
