OC Duff...
seriously consider a tapped pup and a 4-way switch. OC built mine with a 7K tap and low 9s in the full wind for not much more than an off-the shelf pup. Match with a 4 way switch to get each taps with tone and tone bypass. IMHO this is a lot more useful than messing with caps/resistors in the standard configuration!

Depends on what you are after in a pickup - everyone will now yell out their personal favorite without any input from you with regards to what type of music you play, what amp/effects you use and what type of tones you are after. Honestly the list you get won't be much use without a bit more info to go on.
Having said that, here's my suggestion: Seymour Duncan Broadcaster.

There is a sound clip of a Seymour Duncan Broadcaster in my $210 build thread. The rhythm track is with the tone rolled off a little and the lead track is a .001 cap for a cocked wah sound. They are about $58 new and $20 to $40 used.
