Luckily we have the BOTB book... My main color problems are with pre-CBS Fender custom colors... It's a real issue... + many people don't realize how the original colors look (NOS)... and actually dream about a completely different color... especially with the blues (Sonic, LPB, Daphne) and blondes (BS, mid 50's, late 50's...). Now add the level of top coat yellowing and discoloration and you'll get a disaster recipe (-;

different blondes

Macs and PCs also use completely different colour profiles in the operating system, regardless of monitors (colours tend to be more vivid when viewed on PCs because Macs process more shades of gray)

You might just be better off mailing polaroids!
This was true, but now is only sometimes true, with mac version 10.6(snow leopard) they switched the default gamma to 2.2, so all newer and updated macs are now on the same gamma as windows.

Of course that still doesn't change the fact that every single monitor produces color differently. that's what the profiles are for, to take the natural characteristics of the screen and attempt to pull them into looking correct.

and then there's the fact that the majority of images are shot with a automatic white balance and not corrected in post, so pictures of the same guitar will look different just by moving from one room to the next, natural vs artificial light.

even our own memory is not that great at matching one color to another, just try looking at your wall and then going to the paint store and finding that exact color.
if you want to perfectly match a color, the only way is to have a physical sample of what you want to match right next to what you're matching it with, so you can see them together under the same light.

ok i think that's enough of my designer/photographer/artist knowledge for one post.

There's a nice story behind it too.
I was approached by the nicest guy asking me to reproduce the very same Strat he had so many years ago, but... unfortunately, had it sold and now missed it so much )-;
He described it to me from memory alone and we brought it back to life.
The color "issue" was a big real issue with that build because I couldn't photograph it properly and he wanted that exact color he saw in the imaginary picture in his mind. The finish took longer than the whole guitar... but he could only see if it was "right" when he opened up the case for the first time. I really did my very best (and more...) to have him skip a single heart bit when he pulled the last case latch and cranked the case open for the very first time. That is a good example for the best angle in instrument building... the human angle.

Gil, a few more questions for you...

1. What will you do with original burst tailpiece / ABR-1 positioning. Can you create the 'almost' parallel positioning like the originals have? The current Historics line will always be given away since they don't have this..

2. What is original pickup wire that was used for the harness? Can you still get that?

Most have a lower angle but some are steeper. I'm trying to shoot for the original low angle BUT without hurting the intonation range for the low E and A strings. I'll definitely stay away from anything as steep as the RIs. I'll show you exactly how I achieve that when we get to it soon.

There are a few types of wires for a correct 59:
1) black cloth AWG22 tinned 7 strand wire External Braid shielded (#3)
which is used for most connections including the pu leads
2) AWG28 black PVC insulated wire for the internal pu hookups
3) AWG18 solid tinned copper wire (sometimes up to AWG21!!! thin) for pot grounding and bridge grounding
4) AWG22 solid tinned copper for the switch grounding wire and the output jack grounding hookup (+ yellow or maroon Spghetti tubing or yellow PVC tubing)
5) #8 PVC Tubing for the output jack wire

I don't know if I could still get all of it but I have a big enough stock of everything (I always had this habit to buy much more than needed to save for dry times...wish I bought a few bursts when I still could...)

Thanks Gil, sounds like you have it all figured out :-)

I think the bridge/tailpiece setup will be indicative of how real it looks and I'm wondering if it has a tonal impact too (apart from the intonation)?

Yep... pretty much... looks like things are starting to get into place... just waiting for the pore filler to arrive.

I can't see the tonal impact... the only thing might be the relative location of the saddle on the ABR-1, and If that factor has a tonal impact, then yes.
BTW, the pots and caps play an enormous part in that symphony... you can't just through in a cheap set of pots with 20% margin value and an average PIO and expect great results.
