"snakehead" headstock dimensions
i have decided to put a snakehead headstock on my next build.
did a little searching, tried to copy it from pics but when i set it on top of a neck and look at it from across the shop, they just don't look right. so i figured i would ask the experts! width at top, width at the widest point, length from nut to the top should do it. however, if anyone happens to know the radius of the blend from the nut to the widest point, that would be fantastic. thanks guys.

Member Groovyrecords owns a Custom Shop Snakehead Esquire. Perhaps he can supply those dimensions. If you get them, please post them here.

I just had someone contact me about building him a few Snakehead necks. He says he has a PDF of the neck. If he shares that with me, I will get the measurements for you. It should be a pretty straight forward build.

Sure thing. If I make a template, the headstock is a no brainer and I can cut it as part of the process. I have several guys that have me just make the neck without installing frets or dots. So that is no problem and will save you some money too. I fire you back another email. Joe |

1 7/8 at the top and 2 5/8 at the bottom. Nut width is standard. 4 7/8" from the narrowest part to the widest part. Then there is a flare into the nut. J |

When I built mine I tried all avenues to get the correct measurement. These included attempts to contact Fred Stuart who took measurements from the original prototype, contacting a TDPRI member who had a relative in the Fender Custom Shop and contacting retailers in the UK who had Custom Shop replicas listed on eBay. None of these attempts were fruitful.
I ended up using my best estimates based on photographs and vintage style lap steel tuners I had in hand. The following pictures were found on the Internet and are of the first replica built by Fred Stuart when he was with the Custom Shop. ...... ![]() ![]() My Snakehead neck began as a Warmoth Paddle Head ordered without fretboard markers. I cut the headstock shape with the radial saw. ......

JWells When I saw your photo in the guitar case thread I thought it was one of the anniversary repro prototypes, you do beautiful work, Really identical down to the bushings.

The template PDF I sent to Southern Ill Electrics was only for the tuner hole spacing which is critical if you're building a prototype replica using lap steel tuners since the tuners are installed without bushings. Anyone building one should make a drilling template and make sure the tuners fit the template before drilling the headstock.

There was only one original Snakehead prototype built. The second prototype had 6 on a side tuners.

Thank you guys too. I have made a cardboard template using Jack/Jeffro's PDF. I then used vintage strip tuners to mark the holes. I think it looks right. Won't realy know until I make a wood template.
