I'm not in love with the "70's Strat" thing....in fact, I'm unhappy with mine because if its ill-conceived 3 bolt neck. But it is what it is.....

The neck and body i believe had serial numbers that matched and he brought it for about 2000NZD and put it back together(had to replace the pickups as they didnt work even when putten in another guitar to check it wasnt wiring) so it has an SD and two Fender Americans and it is amazing, but i still dont undestand why it was in peices. but anyway abit of history i got to see, and play and i played his 80s original tele(thats what made me a tele man) and ive played the other teachers 70s strat. they dont seem as rare as people make them out to be when in the last 4 years ive played 3 (1=70s orig, 2= 80s parts, 3=80s orig) vintage guitars.

from what i understand fender wasnt happy either, he designed it for a removable acoustic neck but CBS used it on the strat and i dont think he liked it. but i may be wrong.

Cheers Jeremy.

The 3 bolt neck began at Fender in 1971 with the Strat. In '72 the Telecaster Deluxe included a 3 bolt neck, and the Jazz Bass by 1973.

The 4 bolt neck returned to the Anniversary Strat in '79, and to all Strats by 1980. By 1981, all Fender products had returned to the 4 bolt design.

This is all during the CBS years, and it's not clear that Leo had anything to do with it. But I only know these things by having consulted Wikipedia (a.k.a. Truth by Consensus). Leo sold it to CBS in 1965.
