Custom Made Router Bits

I was watching the Wayne Charvel videos and he stated that he uses a custom made router but to make the back shape of his guitar necks. Does anyone know of a company that will make one and what the cost would be? Thanks

It's a job done by an engineering 'toolmaker'.

I was taught to make lathe tools but the high speed of a router blade make the job rather specialized.

Thanks all. I will look at the site and see what I find. If I get one or a price, I will post it here for all.

Essentially you need a shaper or 1/2" router that will take a 1.25" radius round over bit. One with a piliot bearing. They sell on ebay for around $25 for a cheap one. That and a jig can pretty much shape your neck in short time. I currently am working out the bugs on Bill's neck shaping jig that i made. In the end, I still think the round over bit is a better option.

If you are a member at the OLF, there is a great tutorial on using a shaper to do neck blanks (accoustics). Its probably not done the way you would think its done.

I've been experimenting with Bill's neck shaping jig too, so far I've done 5 practice necks on it and it works pretty well - I think once I practice some more it will do any neck back I would want: It's really flexible for doing things like taking neck back profiles from a 2-D drawing of a profile or using a woodworking profile tool. I just needed to work out the scaling and it did a good job. A few days ago one of my mistake pucks gave me a neck profile that was similar to an old Charvell that I used to own.

That's a great jig and it only cost $10 to build.
