Alternative pickguard materials (formica laminate)

Has anybody used any kind of laminate to make a pickguard. I'm having a hard time finding what I want in less than 3' x 8' sheets.

Not really a pickguard, but my first guitar was a 1962 Airline for $5 from a neighbor, when I was kid. The reason it was so cheap is because the rear access cover (which was probably 12" long and 9" wide) was cracked black plastic. Most of it was still there, so my dad traced it onto black Formica, and we hand sawed it out and ground the edges with a file until it fit perfectly. It worked fine for a year, then I sold the guitar the same neighbor's younger brother for $10. Wish I still had it!! It had mucho Mojo.
