Get some different tones of hair dye or clothing dye and try it on scrap wood.

try oil based brush on paint. Can mix yellow ochre and a little white, then add 50/50 linseed or walnut oil and turpentine or mineral spirits to make it a heavy cream consistency and roll it on with a high density foam roller. The paint will self level. Still have to wet sand from 400 to 1000 grit and then rubbing compound to a high gloss. Then again you can likely go to the hardware store and have some oil based paint mixed up for you. Thin it down to a creamy and roll it on. It will take about three coats sanding between each.
