I am tossing up what colour hardware to use Gold or Black -OR Chrome.

I would be interested in your thoughts.

How about unobtainium? Actually Schaller found an element almost as rare:

Ruthenium!

Seriously, I always equate gold with Les Pauls. Gold on a Tele? My favourite on a Tele is brass.

Tassie Blackwood? Sounds like she's a new alt-country singer, with coal black eyes, long legs and long fingers? :^)

Anyway, for that color I recommend nickel plate hardware.

It is hard to get everything matching in black... tuners an all.
Chrome looks... classic but inexpensive...
Nickel is timeless vintage beauty..
Polished pr brushed stainless is beautiful on the right guitar.
Copper or brass looks good but no matching tuners...

I prefer nickel or stainless.

I think gold looks good on blackwood.

Satin nickel would be my fav for most things. Not a fan of gold so I'm hardly unbiased in that respect.

The black pearl finish is very nice. Thank you, BigD for sharing that!

I haven't been able to fine a price for that Ruthenium hardware.

That scares me!

Be afraid. Be very afraid. Their ad copy makes it sound like platinum is too common for them.

And how often do you come across an element you've never heard of!

The "Black Pearl"...

In a former life I was a physicist. I have heard of Ruthenium, and may have even done something with it once. Although I don't think I am allowed to either confirm or deny that.

Though I don't think I have any laying the house right now...

To tell you the truth, the photos on their web site, which I am presuming to have been picked out because they are REALLY GOOD PHOTOS don't really work for me.

Maybe it is warm to the touch?

I wonder what iridium plating looks like?

Black is good.

So is gold.

Nick is that plating or vacuum deposition or some other such thing?

I think though, that whatever it is, I could learn to tolerate that.

I like the look of black hardware on some guitars, but I'm a guy who chooses his clothes based on how well they'll hide stains. How well does black age? Chrome and Nickel age well; I like a bit of patina on brass, but if black gets nicked and shows what's underneath, not so good.

What are people's experiences with black hardware on guitars?

This isn't plating, but it is evidence that black looks bad when it flakes off:

Nickel ages best, then chrome. Black and gold don't look good when they start to wear.

I find myself liking nickel (especially satin-finished nickel) better than chrome. I'm not a "shiny" guy. But when I look at machine tuners, for example, the only nickel ones I see are vintage-style, like this:

Can anyone point me to some 6 on-a-side modern-style tuners in nickel? Doesn't have to be locking, or do any other tricks.

I have not a clue how it's done. Remember those 80s Oakley sunglasses and goggles (probably back in fashion now) ... they were iridium coated.

Because it's see-through I don't think it would be plated - don't they have to first put down a metal for it to electrolize to?
