How about the old-style Firebird sidewinder pickups? They were narrow, and had a very unique sound by virtue of the way the magnets faced 90 degrees to the strings (Just what I've heard, have not researched to confirm that as fact). I just always thought they sounded so different, and kind of thin nasally, but not quite quacky sound. The one I've posted is actually a Gibson Thunderbird Bass Pickup, but you get the drift.

I wonder if you could take a dual coil humbucker apart and re-orient the coils as shown? MMMMM?

I'm loving this one!! So nice to see a unique hand drawn body shape come to life. It reminds me a little of the Wolf played by Jerry Garcia.

Scatter Lee, looking good so far. I'm looking at your off-the-cuff design there and thinking it would make a pretty hot looking bass as well. Any plans in the future for a Scatter Lee Bass build?

.
I think it would make a nice bass too, maybe someday

just having fun with this one anyway, maybe it will get some Tele knobs

started today on the headstock, put a 10 degree angle on the top and thinned down some Maple to 5/8"

got it lined up and clamped

drew up a headstock design, little bit of Les Paul, little bit Tele,, with a horn on top

Then while the neck was setting up I did a little more belt sanding on the body. Added a couple more bevels on the top

did some on the back side

trying to get some curves going on

You could always glue a block onto the heel and rout the tenon pocket deeper if you wanted a neck pickup.

Great to see another build from you, i like how you approach things.

Can i ask how you cut the angle for the headstock join? bandsaw?

Also, did you work out the neck angle based on the bridge height and top contour or are the fingerboard and top of body effectively flat like on a tele? Does that make sense?

I'm enjoying this one as I'm working on a set neck soon.

Cheers

I cut the angle with a router from the side, did not have my miter saw handy, I'll make a hinged box jig to do this easyer one of these days

the neck is flat with the body like a tele, the headstock angle was just made up so the guitar would lay flat and not rest on the end and make it easy to do truss rod adjustments

today I started by doing a rough cut on the headstock

made a template to make a template

then routed it out on the router table

mounted it on the neck with carpet tape and a couple nails where the tuner holes will be

Very sweet build. I'm tasting a little "heavy metal" in the sculpting, and I like it.

glued and screwed, ready to use

Could we get a little background on this gantry planer setup? The router sits on 2- 3/4" pine boards and slides on the PVC?

back to the router /planer to thin the neck a little, it will be about an inch thick and and I'll probably taper off a little toward the nut

will give the fretboard a 12" radius next and then start grinding the back

Here's the setup...

ScatterLee's planer

That whole thread is just a wealth of information for the project-inclined cheapskate. I mean that in a good way.

Mr Scatter, you indeed are very talented. I work all week with Engineers who design DSP chips and they are scary smart. You sir would fit right in, no swamp wildlife allowed however. We here in New England don't play well with swamp wildlife.

I think I will use 4 plastic 4' levels that should work for me.
THANKS !

nice squared up block of wood makes a great drill guide

then drilled the back, left 1/4" thickness where the pot shafts go thru

then routed the holes into one

then did a little freehand routing for the cover, no templates here
