Your dedication to detail is fabulous. I respect it all the more because it's not a self discipline that I have, I go off in my own directions.

Excellent thread...I'm keeping my eyes on it and I'm sure that it's going to be one heck of a great guitar once it's done...

Great thread. I am working on routing a body right now and the pics have helped detail the process. Thanks for posting!

Beautiful work! It's amazing to me how a skilled craftsman can make difficult tasks look so easy. I feel good if I don't bung up the phillips head on a pickguard screw!

Hi Gil,
yes..CNC is the best way to CUT the steel templates.
I can think of two ways to transfer the files into dxf or dwg.

One...An "OK" way...Take an existing dxf and plot it out 1:1. Place your template on top and note any differences. Alter the dxf and repeat until you have a match to your template and cut the steel.

Two...BEST way.... Find someone that has access to a CMM measuring machine and measure the template, convert to a dxf or dwg and cut. You have an EXACT duplicate of your template.

A CMM is a "Coordinate Measuring Machine" that has a probe that follows the contours of an object. It generates what is called a "point cloud" grid. This is then converted to a drawing format.

I hope this helps. I'll email you some starting point dxf or dwg files to try. They were CMMed from my 66 body. They should be pretty close.

Again....Great work and thanks for posting. I can't wait to see the finishing process!
Cheers
ED

I was afraid you were going to say that... I'll try and find a CMM.
Thank you Ed.

I'm still waiting for a specially ordered fret wire (Hugh 6100... but that's what ordered)
It will be interesting to see a 7.25" neck with this fret size. It's a first for me.
So... we'll continue with the body.

Dates and markings are penciled and bridge holes are drilled to final diameters

Template mounting screw holes are plugged with wood and cream filler

and sanded flush

Nails are hammered in the correct locations for quick flip on the lazy Susan

A thin sanding sealer layer is needed here before applying the grain filler because this wood is extremely porous and soft and will suck on the filler unless sealed a little first

I'll let it dry and apply the grain filler by hand (it's more fun this way)

Try to imagine the feel of doing this by hand...

and scraped in 45 degrees to fill the voids in the pourus wood (with a credit card of course)

I'll let it dry for 24 hours and repeat before spraying the nitro sanding sealer

See you soon
Gil

I'm the lucky guy the guitar is made for!
I've been and still am a Strat guy,---yes I know you people love teles, so do I.
I will be posting some vids and review when I get the guitar, I cant predict the future, but I've known Gil for over 20 years, And he's totally dedicated to bring out the best instruments out of his workshop, and uses the best woods, hardware, and home brewed pups.

Meanwhile enjoy some Strat playin'
