WOW!!....almost the same number of turns for the same ohm reading!! How wierd is that?

turns....

This is one HOT pickup!!....We'll have to see how it sounds. I'm tempted to put it in one of my other guitars just to try it out..Maybe!

When you are satisfied that you have what you want, you then have to wrap the pickup with string to protect the windings.

And then pot with wax.....

My potting wax melter is an old eyeglass frame bender. It melts the wax safely.

The wax is a mix of bees wax, paraffin, and lamp black. You just lower the pickup into it for about 10 min.

When finished, let it cool down and check the ohm reading again to make sure that all is well. NOTE...don't check the reading while the pickup is still hot because the reading will be WAY high!...about 2 to 3 K higher!

This is what you will have when done....

Save your old pickup boxes! It's a great place to keep the ones you make!

Jaydawg...I can't wait to hear this thing!! Thanks for the info on the magnets and gauge size!
Motor and Bucko! Thanks for thinking of me... I'm still alive, and yes, I'm making the hay while I can!!

I'm back into the building mode again as I have a SHORT reprieve from my busy work schedual!
This weekend I'll post pictures of the body work in progress.

Thanks all !!
Cheers

Whoa - 13K! If you don't like the sound of that pickup, Ed - you could always attach it to a crane, put some current though it and use it to lift cars...

Lookin' good Ed!

13k with 43 wire is not a strong as 13k with 42. The one that I did with those specs came out good. Go ahead and try it in another guitar then you can give us a full tone report.

The people that make the pliers that you converted to a fret press also make one with swiveling pads. All you need to do is grind the rivet off . Only real difference is the hole is 1/4 inch.

Hope this helps

My oh my...It's been so long I forgot where I was at!!?! Now that things have settled down at work I can get back to the building phase! Things I love to do! I have several projects that I need to finish for friends ( who are very patient...thank you!) Before the Broadcaster gets touched! The VENEER neck is done and on my "surfcaster". I switched out a WD purchased neck with this one. The Macasser ebony finger board has an almost "liquid" feel to it. The hardness of the wood is the main contributor to this . I love the look of the veneer over the slab! Here are a few pictures....

Headstock... Jersey Surfcaster has a nice ring to it! (yes.. I am a stripe bass fisherman!) The surf green color is my favorite!

The look of veneer on the heel end!!

Headstock side...I still need to finish shaping the ends of the nut...

The whole guitar...

Thanks and cheers

Machinin parameters

Hi Ed,

Thanks for this great thread, it has been a pleasure to read through!

Can you enlighten me on a couple of things?

How do you achieve that awesome finish after machining the back of the neck?

I'll be doing a neck soon, CNC'ed, and i'm aiming at 0.001in scallop height, with a 1/2 Ball-nose.

Will be machining at around 50ipm, 12000rpm.

Can you give me your input? Are these reasonable values?

Ok, second question:

When cutting your fret slots, can you give me your parameters? I mean, depth of cut, feed, spindle speed...

In my case i'm aiming at .008 - .010 in terms of depth of cut...

Any help will be gratly appreciated.

In the meantime, this body was machined with a .005in scallop. Not too bad, but i'm aiming for a better finish.

Thanks in advance!

All my drawings for the 53 build were at 14 degrees. The drawings for this build are at 17 degrees. All my others, and there are quite a few, are at 14 degrees! A Fender vintage style bridge still fits perfect though

I missed this the first time around... noticed it looking for the 43 wind info.

On paper, when it's perfectly centered, the layout with 14 degrees is tight - to the point of the control plate side of the pup rubbing the side - possibly knocking the poles slightly out of position as it'd tilt in on the screws and springs. With the route positioned slightly below the center, it would fit ok. I think I even pestered Terry about the angle after having a look and scratching my head for a few days.

As stated, that's on paper... if it fits, it fits. If someone wants to do a GE Smith mount... they might want to do a nice tight clean 17 while keeping the poles lined up perfectly under the strings.

fender - perhaps having the route slightly lower than center reduced the frequency of route gaps showing from under the top edge of the bridge plate - where it would show most to the player.

What kind of wood is this? It looks like MDF.

Hi...50 IPM at 12000 sounds good. As far as the fret slots I used .005 depth at 8000 RPM and 10 IPM. .075 deep. It took a bit of time to slot all the frets , but I didn't want to have to change cutters in the middle of a run! That is more of a pain then the extra time to slot! Those .021 to .024 carbide endmills are fragile!
Nice work on the guitar...As Jack stated, it looks like MDF... double layer...Was there dust in the air!!?!....
Cheers

Hi Casual Reader... Yup...Fender did some wierd things back in the days! I've re-drawn my files to the 17 degree angle. I've made 8 guitars with the 14 degree angle and didn't have a problem on any. Go figure!
Another one of my pet pieves Is the jack cup area. I've seen many a guitar made with a HUGE flat at the jack cup! I personally like the look of the early 50s with no flat. Seems to flow better and the cup still fits fine ( machined or pressed) Sounds like a POLL question! Thats why when someone asks for the file I'll send both...the "50s17dNF" with no flat and the "60s17dF" with a slight flat ...same as the 60s....Uh oh...I'm rambling!!
Cheers
ED

Oh...by the way...The surf green body pictured above is one of my early mahogany bodies with the 14 degree cavity! Great sounding guitar and my new number 1 since I put the new veneer neck on her!

Hi guys!

Ed, thanks for the info...much appreciated, i'll follow your advice.

Oh, do you guys know why it looks MDF? Well, it's because it IS MDF.

It was just a test.

Check the following pics, it's the finished product, just before the final sanding and preparation to apply the finish.

Same here... and a 62 custom just draws more attention to it with the top binding. It's an odd disruption to the symmetry of the hips.

That surf green is a beauty.
