Btw I like it.
Thats one helluva an idea. You can burn the perimeter edges like we use to do in elementary school to make pirate maps or paper look like really old parchment. That would blend the two woods perfectly.

Well lets just not let fear and common sense stand in the way

Tough to judge how much to do.There are so many different types of wood in this stuff it is hard to get it even.Had to be a little gentle around the black binding strip
Needs a little fine tuning

Marty - this is fantastic! I like the burned "sunburst" effect. I think once you put on a PG of some sort you're pretty close to a "good" overall look. I've seen a number of wood PGs in other forums, including some that were burned on the edges too.

Absolutely exciting!!!
I vote for the burned edges, the car backplate pickguard, and would like some ferrous particulars from an old truck (old car radio pots and display for the control plate, ...)

The burnt effect gives it an entire new look. Man, now I'am lost for words on what do use for a pick gaurd. The License Plate would prolly look better now...but i just like it because its sideways...but it barely fits now as it is...so the rust look for a pickgaurd would look awesome...but what would you use?? ( make sure you have your tetnus before playing!)

This whole thing reminds me of the scraps you see around a new home construction site. With that in mind, you need to find such a site and pick up a piece of vinyl flooring for the pickguard. You don't need screws to attach it... a handful of 4 penny common nails will work just fine. Heck, attach the ashtray with nails too. 16 penny ought to work... and if they stick out the back, just knock them over and hammer them back into the wood. All you need for the control plate is a piece of galvanized ductwork and the knobs should be made out of discarded Mountain Dew caps. Oh yeah... there ought to be part of a muddy boot print on the top somewhere.

There ya go... the Pre-HomearamaCaster

Just trying to help...

I think it would look even more classy if the cap was taped on with the duct tape instead of glued.

I wish I had woodworking skills like that, let alone the creativity to come up with those ideas.

Didn't Taylor Guitars build a bunch of acousticals out of pallets a few years ago nails and all. I remember playing one and it sounded good!

The top is flat, isn't it? The burnburst makes it look amazingly 3D, like rolled off on the burn & raised in the middle ... way cool.

WOW...

I'm thinking a linoleum pickguard, set into the top so the top of the PG is level with the top of the particle board. With some grout to fill in around the edges.

BTW... nice grain pattern you picked out. You don't often see that scatter effect.

Man if someone sees a religious figure in that wood uhm-grain that thing will sell for millions on Ebay!!

Well let me say again,I never thought this project would ever get this far!!!
Well I decided we might as well go all the way,so we need a jack hole

And some ferrule holes.Notice how I purposely got them crooked (wink, wink)

If I would have known this was going to be such a big hit I would have made the joint in the middle. There were a couple bad spots on the one piece of fir so I moved the joint off center to get passed them,oh well, adds to the character of the piece.

Well we need to fire up the torch again and go around the jackhole.I got a bit slow handed and scorched the back so we added a few features there too.Might have to refine them a bit too after looking at the pics

OK,back to the front for some finishing touches
