Share the progression game.
Hi,
I'm in a rut not getting the same two progressions out of my head, hands, guitars (and JamMan) for a week plus now. I keep doing sort of an Old Crow Medicine Show song in G and variations of the progression below (I think I typed it right - it's early and the guitars are put away). E, A, F# Min 7th, A then into C#m, B, A back to E. I"ve also been playing with stuff including C6sus4 and D6sus4 at 5th and 7th frets but that's not yet sticking in the head like a broken record. Anybody have something they want to share? Thanks. ;) |

Here's one you can try. It will not only give you a little stretch in the scale department, but it will also make you very aware of the notes in each chord.
I like to cover two chords with one scale if possible. But when you have a chord change like this, the opportunties for expression become really cool if you dig a little deeper. The beauty of this change is that the half-tones linking the scales sound really cool as you pass through them on the chord change. Here's a little example: Brisk, almost funky strum Play Gmaj7 for 8 beats, and then play Bbmaj7 for 8 beats. G maj7 E-----------------------------------------X B-----------------3------------------------ G-------------------------4---------------- D-------------------------4---------------- A-----------------------------------------X E-----------------3------------------------ Bbmaj7 E-----------------------------------------X B-----------------6------------------------ G------------------------7---------------- D------------------------7---------------- A-----------------------------------------X E-----------------6------------------------ Play G ionian over the Gmaj7 chord E------2-----3------------------------------ B------------3-----------5------------------ G------2-----------4-----5------------------- D------2-----------4-----5------------------- A------2-----3-----------5------------------- E------------3-----------5------------------ Play G aeolian over the Bbmaj7 chord "Bb E------------3----------5----6--------------- B------------3----4----------6--------------- G-------2----3----------5-------------------- D------------3----------5------------------- A------------3----------5----6--------------- E------------3----------5----6--------------- Play the above chords 3 times each and then move on to: Am7---D9 ----Bm7 --Em7 --Am7 --Bm7 ---C7 ---C#dim --D9 --D#9 ---D9 //// --////----//// -- //// -- // ---- // ---- // ---- // --- //// -- // ---- // then back to the Gmaj7 - Bbmaj7 chord change - 3x through. A dorian and aeolian scales fit real well over the changes once it hits Am7. |
