I'm interested in this thread too.
I normally use F major scale on F and G chord. Bb major scale on Gm7 chord and arpeggio on the rest. I use the melody and chord notes as reference. Looking forward to what the other guys would say.

In this kind of music you normally work of the arpeggios, slur into each target note from half step below or the scale tone above. There usually isnt one scale that works over all the changes.
You could get through by improvising (Fmaj/D min pentatonic) over the A sections This wont work very well for the bridge. You could always restate the melody over this part Its often a good idea to just play the melody anyway and try embellishing it to taste.

there's no one scale that can do it for ya here. you can think Fmajor over the F, but you'll need to switch to some kind of G7 idea over the G-- arpeggio or you can think G minolydian, i suppose. when it goes back to Gminor to the Gb7 idea, that second one's really just a tritone sub for a C7-- so over both of those chords you could think Fmajor again, but i'd outline the G minor sound some way and get some movement in your lines...
that's the fun thing (and the curse, depending on how you look at it) over those jazz and bossa standards-- often, one scale won't cut it, and even if it does, it'll sound kinda vanilla.

Not on that tune - it's a lot harder than most think. And it's regularly "butchered" in hotel lounges across the country. The verse changes keys within the first two measure and the bridge is in three other keys. It's beautiful when done right but very deceptive in it's seeming simplicity. Jobim was a genius.

Here's a guy that tried http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GFDukuHuzLU
He's got some good lines but most just didn't fit the song. The lines sounded like its taken from other songs. He's a good player though.

...speaking of which, I am looking for one good note to play over Jobim's One Note Samba. I'm thinking about Bb, but I'd like some other opinions. (Just kidding.) --gh |
