Tuning the plank: how about Equal-Tempered tuning?

As we all know: tuning the guitar is a hassle and in the end always a compromise. Let's face it: the thing will never be in tune at all positions on the neck. Try to get the basic cowboy chords all in tune. It won't work. And that's all happening in just one position on the neck. Higher up on the neck the problem gets worse and intonation errors add up. So when recording I try to get the most important chord in the song in tune. Live this will not work ofcourse.

Now some time ago a found an article on the net that went about equal tempered tuning the guitar. We all know the grand and its tempered tuning but somehow I have always overlooked this regarding the guitar. Here's the article:

http://users.adelphia.net/~cygnusx_1...mperament.html

I have tried it and I like it! One of the cons i read was that the specific guitar character was lost. I don't have that experience.

So how about it? Opinions? Better methods?

There's also the Earvana nut.

Yeah, I am aware of both options but they are both hardware solutions. Maybe it's just my problem

Thanks for responding.

I haven't tried either one, since my guitars seem okay with newish strings, but my ear may not be as finely tuned. The Earvana hardware doesn't sound too difficult to install or too expensive from what I can see.
