help me learn "Buckaroo"
Ok I get the first part using the "d" chord structure and I get the A to Em part, but how the heck do you do part where you do the lead riff in A?
DO you just slide the d chord up to the 7th fret and use your pinky on the 2nd string to get that third note? seems awkward, but I haven't been playing lead that long. Apologies to you guys who have been playing this for 30 years. maybe next you can show me how to play "mexican polka" yikes.

which part of the song are you talking about? the lead part on that song was the pedal steel, not the guitar. If you're trying to play that part, the best you can do is to approximate it. I used to play this song in a band, and for the lead I would just improvise something of my own. You still have to use your pinky for the melody part on the D and G chords...if you want to do it right (Listen to the second 2 notes of the song. It's a hammer-on).
Have you heard Clarence White's version? Its on the Byrds live at the Filmore...it's pretty cool. |

How about Buck's Polka? I like this version even better than the studio version.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xF0vjwQ5JKk It's easy to learn but takes a lot of practice to play. And from the Clarence White Forum site, here's his crazy version of Buckeroo: http://www.clarencewhiteforum.com/mp...70_Buck_NW.mp3 |

here is a lesson
On the original Don Rich plays the initial line, later the steeler, I think Tom Brumley comes in, but the riff is definitely Don. The second part of that riff is not super intuitive (other than being the d chord shape) but yeah, the pinky is the way to go... it takes some practice.... do it until you don't have to think about it... The clarence version is cool but, if you want it clean and precise... the original is the way to go.

Try this: The "amazing slow downer"
http://www.ronimusic.com/ Slows down songs without changing the pitch. It really is amazing. David

Its one of those things that I play without thinking, so I had to lift a guitar to check out the bit I think you're talking about.
Pretty hard to do if you don't use your little finger, but should become natural if you work at it a while. Worth doing as its my favourite "try out" song. As for the original Buckaroo's Buckaroo, Tom Brumley only arrived in in thefourth stanza, so all the riffs was Don Rich. |

I am absolutely loving all of these Buck videos showing up on YouTube. Is there anything on this earth sweeter than Don Rich harmonizing with Buck Owens? I don't even care if you like the music or the song, they just go together like peanut butter and jelly!
It's really quite hysterical to note the drastic difference in attire, hair styles, and "stiffness" between 1966 and 1967. A revolution in the course of one season!

one of my favorite things about Don Rich is if you check out the youtube videos , he pulls off these killer tele riffs....while looking into the camera with a big ol' Southern California grin. class act, fer sure. why is there no Don Rich special edition tele? He's largely responsible for about every country band since 1964 having at least one tele in it. I hope Fender is being very generous to late Mr Rich's family. yeah, yeah, I know Merle and the Strangers and Waylon, but that was really a bit later on.

if you don't have this you owe it to yourself. If you love Don Rich, you may also love Gene Moles... He is on the Del Reeves albums and Red Simpson albums... you might love this stuff too
I agree on the smile... an older mentor of mine used to say "whether you play it right or not, smile and the crowd will be with you"

Gene Moles was one of those players where there was much more there than meets the ear. The stuff on the Red Simpson, Del Reeves and Kay Adams albums doesn't sound that intricate at first blush until you sit down and start trying to pick it apart note for note.
He did some pretty sweet surf and hotrod instrumentals too!

Getbent, I like your version a lot!
I'd like to hear some of Gene Moles...I dont know anything about him. Do you know the names of any specific albums that feature a lot of his playing? The guitarist who played with Del Reeves on the Youtube clips of the Porter Wagoner show was playing some pretty cool stuff...I think his name is George Owens... Do you know anything about him? |

Davidge1 if you can find the red simpson greatest hits cd... it is fantabulous... razor and tie is an awesome label. If you can't find that for a reasonable price don't buy the regular greatest hits... I think those are all re recorded and do not contain the original fire... if you can't find anywhere... pm me.... As for Del, I believe Billboard is Gene. His son is a tdpri member and if Eugene reads this he can probably give a better set of songs to sample... I am indiscriminate, when I hear Gene or Roy or Don... I like them all. Also, Bill Hullet or Johnny Isaacs and about every other TDPRI member etc... are way better versed than me on Gene's best work. But I believe he did Red's albums, Del's and guys like Hawkshaw Hawkins and probably Freddie Hart.... He and Roy and Don Rich are just THE california sound for me. When I think Tele and California I think those guys for country and Bernie, Bob Warford and Clarence for country rock. oh yeah and james b is the bridge.

Check out this live version of Buckaroo played by Clarence White in the Byrds... this version is followed up by Clarence's instrumental Nashville West...It's not the best versions they've done but a fun listen
http://www.clarencewhiteforum.com/mp...70_Buck_NW.mp3 Here's another Buckaroo ...this ones Clarence White playing with the Flying Burrito Bros in the Palomino 1969. The late Sneaky Pete on pedal steel trading solos with Clarence.. http://www.clarencewhiteforum.com/mp...o_Buckaroo.mp3 |

Hey Davidge, check out Red Simpson's 'Truck Drivin Fool' and Kay Adams' 'Wheels and Tears'. Gene Moles is all over both of those and they're both great examples of some stripped down mid 60s Bakersfield pickin.
