I heard this neat steel lick on the radio after work today. Its a Toby Keith tune about a bar :?
--7--------------------------------- -----10----------------------------- --------b(9) 11r9 ------9b11------- --------------------12*-------------- --------------------12*-------------- ------------------------------------- * natural harmonics prebend the G string 9 fret to 11 fret then strike and release to 9. let the harmonics ring out as you bend the G string lets see some more steel |

Here's one that I use a whole lot -
(let's put it in the people's key of E :D ) Hit the D string with your pinky and grab the G string with your index finger...then pull! -------------------------------------------------- -------------------------------------------------- ----------------------------------9---------9b11- -----------11-hammer on-12-------12---12---- -12--12------------------------------------------ --------------------------------------------------- Going from you guys' posts I'm assumin' something like 9b11 means nineth fret, bend up to eleven right? What is the abbreviation or little symbol thing for a hammer on? |

Your lick is actually in the chicken pickers key of D. Dont mean to be picky :? I find it hard to bend the G string away from the d. It takes alot of strength but it sounds so Good. :P |

I try to throw that thang in all over the place - I just recently recorded a song that I play it over each chord change of A, D, and an E (Tele295's heard it :D ). It's one of those licks that I use every chance I get...probably way, way too often hahaha!
Thanks so much Tim! With the "h" being hammer on... I didnt' even put two and two together heh heh heh - I'll get the hang of this tab thing soon I'm diggin' these steel licks Cheesecaster & Ward, please keep 'em comin'! |

Steel licks
I really appreciate the licks here. What gage strings are you guys usin' to get your two fret bends. I have been playing about 40 years, but can't bend that far, either really weak, or been usin' the same brand/size of strings far too long....thanks......

I use 11-52 on my Strat and those 2 note bends kill. When I get ahold of a Tele soon I
will likely stick on 10-48 ish. The strat dont do those bends very well cause of the trem bridge. |

MP3's
Cheesecaster, my buddy Eric just posted those songs. These were recorded on an analog four track with one blown channel in my KITCHEN, so please don't laugh at me too much hahaha!
I wrote the first one and the second is a Tammy Wynette tune. I'm playing the upright bass on the first one (my timing wanes in and out because it was the first time I'd ever played a song all the way completely through...and my arm was about to FALL OFF) and electric bass on the second. The first one has a few quick steel licks thrown in there. http://www.telemodders.com/m_thompson.html |

Mandy- I like the songs! That one you wrote is really good. Did you get blisters from the stand up? They were worth it, cause it sounds great. Awesome pickin! Ward
Since this is the steel thread, here's an intro that's on like every George Strait swing tune (ex. "Oh Me, Oh My", there's others, but I can't remember right now") This intro is in the key of E. You start on the V chord, or E, and work down to the I, or A. When you see the slides, it means slide down, but you also gotta pick the three notes at the end of the slide. You'll see when you do it. The fingering is as follows, use, your index finger as a bar the whole way down. On the minor chording parts ( the 5 5 6 and 3 3 4), use your middle and ring fingers as well. Ward E////////////////////////////////A --------------------------------------------- -7-8-9s5--7s3--5s2--3s1--2------------- -7-8-9s6--7s4--6s2--4s1--2----------------- -7-8-9s6--7s4--6s2--4s1--2-------------------- --------------------------------------------- -------------------------------------------- |

Thanks so much Ward!
I got blisters somethin' fierce slapping that thang - I bought it because a buddy was selling it really cheap and I thought it'd make great furniture (TOTALLY the wrong reason, I know, I know haha!). I now have even more MUCHO respect for every double bass player in the world. I have zero endurance and I don't see how they do it! Another big thanks to you and Cheesecaster for teaching so many cool licks and making this my favorite area of the board! :D |

You know, a good idea to help the blisters is to use athletic tape on your fingers, like an NFL lineback would do. I had a guy in my old band who swithced to the doghouse bass and that's the only way he could get by.
