So you can only learn guitar off the net...

Can you recommend any good sites for a complete newbie?

Sure I know a few chords but to be honest I'd like to be a lot better. Only have an acoustic at the mo (paying off my first tele) and want to prepare to make the transition smoother.

I do take lessons but heard that you can save a bunch by using you tube vids and learning online.

Can you recommend anything? I want to be able to eventually play the riffs in Keith Urban songs and 80s rock.

I love the guitar with everything I have and if anything I prolly practice TOO much my hands are really sore. I also have trouble using the little finger on my left hand-most of my callouses are only the three fingers..

Also, I am double jointed so when I hit the strings my fingers bend at the joint and look broken-my teacher winces every time I do it lol

So yeah-wanna learn as fast as humanly possibly. I also think my muscle memory is poor. I still have trouble going from G to D really fluidly and the F chord I believe is called the F chord for a reason...

Marty is prolific on the web and pretty easy to learn from, I've watched a few of his DVD's that were helpful.

I find that there a loads of great guitar lessons/tutorials
on YouTube.
If any given video is not helpful, there are usually a couple others.
I have learned innumerable songs/arrangements/solos this way.
Adam Rafferty is one of my favorite finger style players/teachers.

In the immortal words of Steve Mizerak, "Practice, practice, practice!".

I'd suggest you spend some practice time playing songs you like--makes learning a lot more fun that way. I don't have any magical websites to give you--I learned before the internet existed by using a 300-page thick book of Beatles sheet music.

When you are first beginning in my opinion you really should take lessons from a real instructor (which I see that you have) so that you learn how to hold the guitar and your hands correctly among other things that are important to playing. It is hard to correct those bad habits later.

I have lots of books and videos. I have found Marty's material to be all over the place and not very organized for learning for a beginner. He is not bad for someone who already knows how to play.

http://justinguitar.com/ is very good.

As a DVD package for beginners I really like the organization and teaching methods in the Learn and Master series.

I travel a lot and have started taking my guitar with me so I could keep busy and be more creative. As a complete beginner I thought youtube and dvd's would work but they really didn't for me. I started taking lessons in Kansas and just had my first one in Honolulu yesterday. By far the private lesson is the best for me. once I avance a little more that might change but I like sitting and talking with someone while I learn and it's been very beneficial to me.

Marty is great, but for newbies I'd recommend Rockongoodpeople. Marty actually taught some on there too. It is a bunch of teachers and their latest stuff is not for you, but their early stuff was for beginners and really helped me along every step. Some really basic stuff too. Good luck and have fun!

I keep seeing two names pop up again and again:

JAMPLAY.COM and GUITARTRICKS.COM

Is one better than the other, and if so, why?

Another vote for justinguitar.com

His Beginners & Intermediate DVD series will give you a solid start along with his Major Scale DVD.

When you progress a bit, I also recommend Doug Seven's stuff if you wanna learn some country picking licks. See here; http://sizzlingguitarlicks.com

You can't beat a good teacher either but with these DVD courses you always have something to work on anytime of day.

Good luck.

Love that there are LOADS of free lessons on there, all nicely organised in a real kind of order. Then if you like his stuff you can either donate or plumb for one of his DVDs/books... Both of which I regularly read great things about.

He also has a section on transcribing, something that over these last few months has made me a much better player already!

Just google "Keith Urban Where the Blacktop Ends Tab" (for instance) and a few tabs with pretty accurate transcriptions will pop up. When I was learning guitar in high school I would browse the search results (guitar in hand) until I found one that sounded right to my ears.
You'll also reap some ear training benefits from this by learning several tabs and deciding which ones are good and which ones have bad notes.

You make a good point and I would also add that even if someone starts off with on-line learning, DVDs etc, it's never too late to find a good teacher when they feel they've reached a plateau with the self-taught materials. It can be money well spent to have the guidance of a good teacher.
