...you may.. or may not know...thumbpickers do it different!...merle travis... chet atkins..etc..use different chord shapes..to get the melody notes...while holdin the bass down...they use parts of chords...sometimes with open strings..or chords that may not even have a root in the bass....most times useing as few fingers as possible..(chord hand)...leaving the extra finger to get the melody notes...this is a cool idea..even if you dont thumbpick.....so....show your sneeky chords...or even just the cool and different ones you like....heres one..G7 shape where you can add some extra notes on the high strings... to get where your going....3X343X...bar the third fret...second finger g string fourth fret...

In jazz you often see voicings that skip the 5th string. These are easier to play with thumb and fingers than strumming---Joe Pass, Jimmy Bruno etc.
