Um, er...how do I count a train beat?

Is this train beat in, like 2/4 (two beats per meauser)?
is it in 4/4 (4 beats per measure)?
Do i count it 1&, 2&, 1&, 2&
or 1&, 2&, 3&,4&...etc...
thanks,

scotty.

it can be either. depending on the song.

The top number represents the number of beats per measure.
The bottom number represents the note value that gets the beat.
IE; in 4/4 there are 4 beats per measure, and the quarter note gets the beat.
In 2/4 there are 2 beats per measure, and the quarter note gets the beat.

2/4 time = accent is on beats 1 & 2.
4/4 time = accent is on beats 1 & 3 with emphasis on 1.

I can't seem to find the start of this, but he 'splains that he used to hear the trains out of his bedroom window, and wanted to duplicate it on the drums. He came up with the Purdie Shuffle which has all kinds of fun with "train beats".

Yes, because of the Doppler Effect it's different after it passes. Unless it hits you.

A 2 cylinder steam locomotive will make four chuffs per revolution of the driving wheels - so I guess that's 4/4. But a 3 cylinder steam locomotive will make six chuffs per revolution, so is that 6/6? I have no idea about diesels or electrics. So doesn't it depend on which sort of train you are trying to emulate?

If we're sticking to 4/4, surely nobody ever got it better than Chuck Berry & his magnificent band?

They even get that syncopation spot on.
