"Bus Stop" solo-- a fugue?

I'm a bit rusty on my Baroque counterpoint theory-- is this solo at 1:29 between two guitars a real fugue?

No digital delay back then? I guess they just had to use their digits.

I can't tell sitting here without my guitar if the second guitar is imitating at the unison or fifth. If it is the unison, then this is a mini-canon. If it is the 5th, then a mini-partial-fugue. A fugue has more elements than this, but, still, very cool of them to do. Technically, though, it is really just imitation due to the small scope of it.

I thought the word for it was "stretto", which is a particular device used in a fugue, but my memory is foggy.

It turns out that this song was written by Graham Gouldman of 10cc. A pretty intricate melody and lyric.

Gouldman wrote a lot of British Invasion stuff, including Heart Full of Soul and For Your Love.

Good point. Usually the second voice enters after the first voice finishes the subject. At this point the second voice plays the subject usually at the fifth, and the first voice continues playing new material, called the answer. If the second voice enters on the subject before the first voice has finished the subject, then you have a stretto. The stretto usually occurs near the end of the work. While we shouldn't really call the music here a fugue, as it is way too short to get enough information, I could go with calling this a stretto in a quasi-fugue.

The fail-safe term would be imitation.

Very cool, but not a fugue. I would call it imitation. Fugue is a process with many requirements/events. Stretto is but one of the possible devices used in a fugue.

This is an excellent source to learn more. The shockwave movies, analyses, and explanations are very, very good.

If you look at the C major fugue from The Well-Tempered Clavier, you will see some very good examples of stretto in use.

Was that Graham Nash on the singers left and second guitar?
