I like playing scales to loosen up.

Start out gradually, and progress to play some slower riffs. Progressively increase your speed until you are ready to go!

However, if the cramping is a medical issue your best bet would be to talk to your doctor.

I use chromatic exercises as a first warm up, then 3 on a string major scales...I do everything ascending and descending.

Of course, the biggest thing that freezes me up is not really knowing what I'm playing. Are we talking physical cramping here, or brain/finger disconnect?

Righty tighty, lefty loosey!

Actually, I just clench and unclench my hands, then fingers, then roll the fingers a bit. I then just start playing some leads and chords. At my age it helps to take some ibu or another anti-inflammatory.

I'll practice for 20 mins or so and by then i have my strings heated up for a fine tuning and then go for it.

Best finger stretcher.
Start around the 12th fret and do
play them high to low.
Put all fingers down at once or "lay em as you play 'em.
Now slip the index finger down to 11 and leave the others.
Now slip the middle finger down to 12.
Then the ring down to 13...
You get it.
Slip one finger down at a time until you get 11,12,13,14.
Repeat the process.
As the frets get further apart, it's gets harder to stretch.
