Can Anyone Please recommend "Chicken Pickin'' instructional DVD . . .
. . . that could help someone who is not well-versed in Country guitar playing?
Reviews generally describe the famous Johnny Hiland video as being "for advanced players only". Is there anything out there a little more remedial? Thanks. |

I'd say go ahead and get it. I'm actually interested in checking out Hiland's DVD as well. If it's too over your head at first, you have something to work toward. Even if its for "advanced players," one would think there would be at least something basic that you could grab on to and use as a starting point.
I'm fairly new at the country playing myself. Apparently, the term "chicken pickin" may mean different things depending on who you ask. It could refer to "banjo-style" fingerpicking (ala Albert Lee on "Country Boy") or the fast, string-muting attacks (that are suppose to imitate a chicken's clucking). Either way, you want to start slow and get the right hand rhythmically consistent, especially if you want to do any hybird-picking or banjo-rolls. |

Brent Mason is my favorite DVD but there are plenty of beginner DVD's out there. Albert Lee and several others. When I first started chicken pickin it took a long time to really "get it" coming from a rock background. Just practice and you will get the hang of it.

I have Johnny Hiland, Brent Mason, Ray Flacke, Albert Lee, Todd Barthe, Steve Trovato, Doug Seven, Steve Piticco, Jerry Donohue, Danny Gatton, Paul "Chappy" Chapman DVD's/Videos and probably some others i can't think of at the moment.......
They are all great DVD's/Videos (IMHO) but most don't explicitly tell you what the right hand (i.e. picking hand) technique(s) involved in many of the licks are, some have tabs which occasionally leave out notes .....but I dont want to slag any of them them off as they are all really useful once you get an understanding of the Hybrid/Chicken' Pickin' idea. If I was to recommend an instructional DVD to an beginner chickin pickin guitarist i would suggest Steve Trovato's "lick Library" Albert Lee style DVD. Steve is a great teacher, enthusiastic and actually puts effort into teaching rather then then just shredding or going thru the motions. Johhny Hiland also has some instructional CD's which are really good too but dont expect much right hand disambiguation. Another thing that helped/helps me is amazing slow downer (or any good slow downing device) and slow down a guitar part you're interested in and when trying to learn it use a middle or ring finger for any note that is hard to do straight out with a pick ...............you'll catch on pretty quickly........ regards, steve |

For my money, TRueFire.com has great educational videos, emphasis on educational, not some famous hotshot blazing through hot licks and teaching you nothing. Scott Grove ( our own ITSGOTQUACK ) is also a great teacher. To me, that's where you learn the best. I enjoy the big name's videos, but I don't learn much from them. Exception would be Redd Volkaert's DVD, it has a tab book included and he shows you the licks at slow speed, and it has a full concert @ the Continental Club as a bonus. I use some of the licks I learned from Redd every time I play. To me, truefire.com, Scott Grove and Redd's DVD will teach more than most other options out there. YMMV
I've never bought anything from Doug Seven, so I can't comment on it. Here are a few links to what I've just mentioned: http://groovymusiclessons.webs.com/meetscottgrove.htm http://truefire.com/country-guitar-lessons/ http://www.amazon.com/Redd-Volkaert-TeleTwang/dp/B000JJSJN2/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&qid=1300971777&sr=8-4

Here are my favorite titles:
Alan Warner - Start Playing Country Guitar Licks (Easy-Difficult) Brent Mason - Nashville Chops and Western Swing Guitar (very difficult) Doug Seven - Sizzling Guitar Licks 1-4/Hotter Licks & One-Liners/Playing in Circles (Intermediate-Difficult) Paul Kramer - Country Guitar Soloing (Intermediate-Difficult) Scotty Anderson - Red Hot Guitar (very difficult) Steve Trovato - Country Licks for Guitar/Country Rock Soloing Concepts/Albert Lee/Ultimate Play-Along Country (easy-difficult) Johnny Hiland - Chicken Pickin Guitar (easy-intermediate) Mike Levine - Country Rock Riffs (easy-intermediate) My favorite of 'em all is everything Doug Seven has put out. The guy is great. If you want to learn hybrid picking start with Sizzling Licks volume 4. |
