I think it's great that you're doing that!

And this is just a general statement on the process to any and all ... it doesn't matter if you forget 'em the next day or remember them for the rest of your life - it's the process that counts. They're all in there somewhere and bits come out when you need it.

i think this is really important learning a broad variety of songs taking and keeping notes writing out tab or notation

songs you might not like or pick just to learn the style structure and technique

also working on a favorite song for a long time ( like a year) till you master it eg every morning while the coffee is on even if its 5 min. before you leave for work

Today I crossed over 5150 posts so I had to work on a Van Halen track.
I actually know a bunch of them but Panama is one I never got around to learning so it was the one.

I''ve done the chords and the basic structure- there are a lot of little bits and pieces to work on though- lots going on in this one.
Off to rehearsal now though so will have to finish it off tonight.

Todays track is 'Slackjaw Jezebel' by Govt Mule.

Killer song- so much to play- want to gig it soon.
Reminds me of my ex-girlfriend. :-)
Still need to transcribe the solo- or at least pinch a bunch of ideas from it.

Solo is mostly done now too.

Man alive, Warren Haynes is one tasty bugger.

Today's tune is the most excellent 'Subtle Hustle' by Clutch.

Here is how they do it:

Was quick one to learn- the intro riff is the chorus and the verse is a straight G -> A power chord thing.
Took about 10 mins all up.

I now know 5 songs more than I did 4 days ago.
This is good.

I reckon I've spent less than 2 hours learning these songs over the course of the last 4 days.
This is very much a lesson to myself to not use being busy as an excuse to let this go.
I've still managed to get everything else I needed to do this week done.

How has everyone else been going?

Going to try to do 3 songs today.

1st one already done which is Elvis Costello's 'Pump it up'- ok, kinda cheating as it is pretty simple but it is a useful function band song to know.

maybe you could use this information in the thread and show us what the key basic chord changes and structure of the songs are that your learning

as you go along your merry way you'll be doing the dirty work and we can all be learning from this journey too

just an idea

Yes, I can probably do that.
Most of the songs I am working on are riff based though so not sure how I will get those to you.
I can do standard notation if people can read it.

Working on 'Waiting for the world to change' by John Mayer.
Great tune- started with the solo which is a nice B pentatonic line that really suits the song.

Will get this into Sibelius and charted out and post it later.

Decided it is going to be simpler to just give some chords to the John Mayer tune.
Such a tasty tune.

Verse:

D / Bm / | G / D / | (Me and all my friends, we're all misunderstood)
A / Bm / | G / D / | (They say we stand for nothing and there's no way we ever could)
A / Bm / | G / D / | (Now we see everything that's going wrong, with this world and those who lead it))
A / Bm / | G / D / | (We just feel like we don't have the means, to rise above and beat it)

Chorus:

D / Bm / | G / D / | (So we keep waiting, waiting)
A / Bm / | G / D / | (Waiting on the world to change)
D / Em7 / | Bm7 / Em7 / | (So hard to beat the system, when we're standing at a distance)
D / Bm / | G / D / | (So we keep waiting, waiting)
A / Bm / | G / D / | (Waiting on the world to change)

Second verse is the same as the first and back to the chorus.

Before the solo there is a Gm vamp and then he kicks in with a B pentatonic minor solo.
Very tasty but simple.

Then we are back into the chorus to take us out- dont forget the D -> Em Bm7 ->Em7 section in the chorus ('One day our generation is gonna rule the population".

Is this enough detail for people?
It is actually more time consuming to write it out than it is to actually work out the track.
I don't mind but perhaps people specifically request songs they are interested in and I will post them up rather than assume everyone wants to lear the same songs.
Let me know.

It is helpful to break this down into numbers in case you want to transpose it about.

For instance the verse is:

I, vi, IV, I
V, vi, IV, I

Todays tune is "Mob Goes Wild' by Clutch.
Lots of riffing in Em.

Yes, I am in a bit of a rock phase at the moment.

I can learn about one a month, although I did get" Who'll stop the rain" today in a few minutes. And I'm now playing around with "Bad moon rising" easy ones.I've trying to learn "Don't let me down" I think Beatle songs are a lot more complicated than you first think they are."two of us" is another one I learn recently .I like playing the bass runs on this one

Missed yesterday as I was busy with a new bathroom we are putting in (finally).

I'm one song up anyway so it is cool.
Todays song is going to be a bit of a step up technically.
It will take me a bit longer than the others have- lots of little shreddy bits to it.

"Speak When Spoken To" by Freak Kitchen.
It sounds like this:

Why do I do this to myself?

Looks like Matthias Eklund uses a C# sus4 tuning (C# G# C# F# G# C#) on this track.
This is going to be a pig to transcribe.
I'm still going to do it but first I need to restring as 9-46's in C# are going to flap around too much.

I think I would like to learn Chicago's" 25or 6 to 4",or Steely Dan's "Do it again" the songs solos on both of em and other similar jazz rock fusion stuff..Me I look for licks that I don't already know. while I like country players like Doug 7 and all those guys..I'm trying to move away from both blues and honkytonk type sound just to find my own sound and not be another clone. or on the opposite side of the spectrum the modern drop d make it heavy stuff that pretty much nu metal is..not my cup of tea..more into Guys Like Eric Johnson..

Just make sure your bass player knows his part right on this one.

I think one song a day is a lofty goal for anyone. When I get to the point where I can learn and play songs, I'm going to shoot for learning one or two a week. Right now, in my guitar novice playing infancy, I try to learn one new riff a week. I like that subtle hustle, pretty cool song. La Grange is something I was thinking about adding to my small but ever growing repertoire. This is a great thread Octatonic!
