jazz pick users!
Hey all,
I think that I've finally arrived on the perfect pick for me, the dunlop tortex purple teardrop jazz picks. I thouught about buying some more, but after a really brief search, it appears that they may not be super easy to find. Anyway, what do you guys use, and how eie you come to jazz picks?

Picks for jazz? Everyone seems to have their own faves.
Me? Comping -- fingers, single notes: the thickest Big Stubby (purple, 3mm): ![]() I've been meaning to try the V-picks.

I like the Dunlop Purple Tortex, or the red Jazz III XL if I want more definition.

I went from the thinnnest, flimsiest white Duncans ...
... 40 years ago when I first started playing, immediately to the red Jazz IIIs about ten years ago and have never looked back.
+1 on that, although as of late I have been playing sans pick, though I haven't tried at a gig yet; I'm a little askeered. Peace.

I'm not really a jazz player but have been using the red Dunlop Jazz II's since a buddy turned me on to one back in the eighties. I've noticed that they get better with age as the edges get beveled down a bit. I've also found the green Tortex M3's (same shape as a Jazz III) to be good for a little brighter sound.

I use the Dunlop Jazz III. They're the black ones. I remember first hearing about them when I found out Eric Johnson used them. I looked them up and thought I could never get used to a pick that small. I always thought the 351 shape was the best. Then as I found out more and more people were using them and swearing by them, I decided to buy a pack.
I'm not going back. I don't know if I feel like I can play faster as some claim, but I feel like I have much better control over picking. And it's actually more comfortable to me than the standard 351 shape. And best of all, they're usually available at any store around here for a couple bucks a pack.

I use Dunlop Jazztones (#207), Dunlop teardrops (1.0 and 1.14mm), and came to them from Gibson Stars (shaped like Jazztone #207). I liked the Gibsons very well, there's something about the material of which they're made that has a very nice, rather dark tone; however, they're no longer available and I've got about 200 left - should last me to my death. When the Gibsons became unavailable, I tried several and got the closest tone from the Dunlop Jazztones, so I started using those. When I want a much brighter tone I use the Tortex. I never liked standard-shaped picks, so that's how I happened to start using the Gibson Stars. |

I use the H3- which is the mini-tortex jazz 3 shape.
Used them for 20 years now- they are the business.

Me too. The Ultex material - which I guess is pretty similar to the Ultem picks made by Clayton - have a great tone and are super durable. Don't know exactly what kind of synthetic they are, but whatever it is, adding colors must weaken it, as Ultex/Ultem are virtually the same semi-clear dull amber shade.

I use the purple GatorGrips for comping. The big stubby is good for single line stuff, but I don't like the noise they make against the strings for comping.

Jazz III's since I first saw an add for them in the mid 70's.Here's a little known fact. They changed the material they made them out of in the 80's at some point.Eric Johnson asked them recently if they would make him some like the originals. You can buy them at M.F.They are different but not enough for me to order my picks special.

Pickboy J-Pick Jazz 1.5 mm for me. About 10 years ago I wanted to find a pick that worked for me and tried as many different types as I could find. I was working in Manhattan and walked down 48th St. on my way home every day, so there were plenty of shops with different choices. I settled on the Pickboy Jazz because it had a standard size vs. the smallness that jazz picks tend to have, the material felt right and I could get it in different depths from 1.0 to 1.5 mm.
For a while they were hard to find - but now I get them from SweetMusicShoppe on ebay. They have every size and I can buy in packs of 3 or 5, not a dozen. I have tried others since, but find I go back to this one. I use the 1.5, but I think I am going to experiment a little with the 1.0 and 1.2. |
