I still think it should be more of a ADD A LICK/TAKE A LICK format and should not be limited to one lick a day. I would be willing to participate, but again, I think the thread will get bogged down if we don't make some rules.

any ideas on how to do it without getting full of fluff? i think my idea would work, but i agree, if it wasn't limited to ONE a day we might get more participation...

I would think we would need the help of our fine moderators to make sure the thread doesn't get bogged down with fluff. Or maybe they would let this one thread have a separate moderator to remove the fluff. Just vamping here...

Dan

PS I nominate Jazztele

If not, maybe we can start one. Here is my first lick.

It was great, until you sped it up ;o)

Why waste so many notes?

There are a number of good ideas... I like the idea of taking a lick that someone submits, interpreting and playing it my way, and then adding my next progression and making a new lick... Then, someone else can add to the new lick...

You forum geniuses can figure out the rules and format... Sounds fun to me, as long as it's OK that I don't know how to chicken pick...

I'm thinking of this because of the first submission by Telewanger, which I found playing my way, and wanting to continue... I could make a video, I guess...!

Courtesy of Mr. Freddie King, the Texas Cannonball from Chicago

I like these notes a lot. I think of this as being in a C minor pent with added A and D. That seems to be the way this lick is generally used, in a C minor pent context. The earliest I have heard this lick is by Freddie King. It also shows up in other guitarists' work, such Elvin Bishop and Walter Trout (he uses it a lot). Probably mid-60s Clapton and Green, oh yes, B.B. uses it, too. Definitely not Albert King, who is more of a straight minor pent guy when doing 12-bar blues. It can be used on C7 in a C 12-bar blues, but also over F7 and G7 if you have a more expansive harmonic view. I like to play ahead of the chord as an anticipation of the coming harmony.

C'mon now.... BB has never played that run, that fast ;o)

Clapton may have, once, when he was "speeding".

Just play yer geetar... Stop all this anal-y-sis.

"Layla" Notation and TAB

A straight-ahead version..Some string bending can be done as well..I might try to figure out how to notate the bending some other day, but tonight..I gotta go beddie-bye..

My vote would be not to organize it more or add bunch of rules or delete replies, etc. Just post them and off we go, easy as pie. When you start adding a bunch of rules it gets less fun. For those who are extra serious about it, just start a Youtube channel and post links -- that gives you all the control you seek without reducing my choices. And I'll still cop the licks. :)

I'm happy to contribute anytime. (and can get twang licks up to fairly decent speed after a couple coffees) I guess what I would love to see is people posting licks which are more universal. Licks that less-advanced players can use at jams, etc. (in addition to advanced stuff)

Most of my students have Doug Seven DVDs rotting in their closets because it's not stuff they can learn or use. It would be nice to give those folks riffs they can use today that sound cool or illustrate some popular idea. My 2 cents.

Man, I just don't have to patience to decipher tab and sheet music... A quick Youtube video would really help... Not that I want to learn Layla, I don't, but take the very first post... He posted tabs, but played on Youtube... The tabs alone meant nothing to me, but as soon as I saw and heard him on Youtube, I got it, and recognized it as a similar run that I do... Then the tabs really help...

Here's one. It works in a C blues on C7 and F7.

Wednesday Lick

I have to remind myself to think rhythmically. My weakness is even duration runs, so this is an antidote. When I catalog things, I write everything in C blues.

Slurred beats can be tricky at fast tempos.

I'll play along, not very good at this and don;t have any tab, but here is a video I took today of a country style lick I just made up...it's in A but you can move it all over...sorry guys I have no theory at all, can't tell you what it works with or anything, just made it up. it's short and for some reason there is the "Workin man's blues" type of lick in there too....go easy on me
