Songs with funky/groovy guitar

I am not looking for songs with the "typical" sense of funk or groove. Not those rhythms with sharp sounding clean chords with percussives.

Perhaps a something with the feel of the intro of these songs:

I really enjoy those types of guitar riffs. They are very stylish and not funk in the over used style.

Please Keep in mind I am not trying to insult any form of funk or groove music I am just wanting something more new / posibly psychedelic / Effect heavy funk. :). I hope I made myself clear. Thanks guys :).

Haha yea. Its Post hardcore + Funk. PHC has screaming and "punk / emo" singing which is typically a much higher pitched voice with a little bit of yelling mixed into the singing technique. its not for everyone. :).|
Anyone else have ideas?

My all time fave groove is Tighten Up by Archie Bell and The Drells -- awesome foundation lesson playing that one. :)

I dunno man, I just heard a mixture is all.

The funk guitar is like RHCP from Mothers Milk/ Blood Sugar Sex Magic.

Chorus is like Linkin Park, Alexisonfire.

Old but good:. You'll like this:

Infectious Grooves Not new.

Primus ...just add screaming.

Freaky cool- another primus one I didn't know

Primus again. Effect heavy. Funk.

I used to play in a band with a bass player who loved primus. I didn't get them but now I do. I am buying an album tomorrow.

Here's a Vai song. Not sure where the line is between funk and jazz fusion. But this one is definitely psychedelic. Something green was used here....and I don't mean a tube-screamer, hehe.

Zappa's Inca Roads is one of the coolest grooves ever in that vein and likely gave birth to many of the grooves on Flexable.

Saw this on that site:

Quote:
Vai's dual nature shows up in his personal as well as musical life. He eschews the stereotypical excesses viewed by many as the spoils of rock and roll stardom. Today, he is a devoted family man with a wife and two sons, and is quite outspoken about his aversion to drug and alcohol use.
Interesting. So Flexable (great album) was more of an intellectual exercise. Like jazz-fusion. Goes to show that you can make crazy-cool way-out music without drugs then, doesn't it? Actually I remembering it feeling different than say, Hendrix to listen to. I discovered both at the same time. Good to have another sober hero.

He's a freak musician. I never listened to Zappa, although I know that Vai was in awe of him. I like Vai because of the movie Crossroads.

Glad I spotted this thread. I'm buying a Primus album.

Yes and yes. Zappa was not into drugs and didn't really cotton to hiring those who were for the most part. Steve Vai on his audition for Zappa:

Les Claypool is an extremely interesting musician. That's all you have to be in this lifetime. The video for Winona's Big Brown Beaver is classic. :)

It may be "hard rock" but you can't deny there's a serious groove.

Consider Mean Street by Van Halen for something different.

Maybe change the groove a bit.

Aaaah, The Meters. Those Sansu recordings tested the boundaries of R&B perfection every bit as much as Stax/Volt, etc. Some of the most influential vinyl ever, Toussaint doesn't get the credit he deserves IMO.
