Hybrid Picking book recommendation
I just got this book out of the local library:
Hybrid Picking by Wyn Pearson, a Mel Bay publication http://www.melbay.com/product.asp?productid=21343DP http://www.amazon.com/Mel-Bay-presen.../dp/0786676078 I have been playing for a long time (40+ years) and using hybrid picking for the last 12 years or so. I thought I was pretty good at it, though not particularly fast. This book really shows me some new things. It is a very basic no-frills book full of short excercises. The excercises are very clearly written in tab and standard notation, with brief explanatory comments where needed. On the accompanying DVD the author plays each excercise first slowly, and then at speed... again no-frills but very clear and easy to understand. The exercises are really good, practical licks that I think most guitar players would be happy to have in their bag of tricks, and they take some of the mystery out of a lot of the hot country guitar licks that have baffled me all this time. A big thumb's up from me. |

Nice idea for a thread! Alot of people (including myself) asked about starting out hybrid picking... or maybe for some exercises to help them practice!
I found this book called Rockabilly Guitar, by a guy called Fred Sokolow, it's a well organised book that outlines alot of picking patterns. He uses his thumb, but it's not hard to change the thumb to flatpick and work out the patterns from there Peace

+1 for Fred.
I really enjoyed getting stuck into this book and the CDs, and I did the same, just used flatpick instead of my thumb for the fingerpicking parts. I've got so used to it now that I hybrid pick John Fahey stuff. Seems to work.

+2 for Fred and all his materials. There are some people who are just good at explaining things and Fred is one of them. His easy going personality gives no clues to the depth of his experience and knowledge, Fred is a great asset to the guitar scene.
I remember reading his book Fretboard Roadmaps years ago. (and his other stuff) Depending on how you like to view things it can be a downright enlightening book. :) |
