Nice changes for Over the Rainbow?
I was hoping someone has the changes to Somewhere Over the Rainbow. I've listened to many very cool versions of this tune and so many different variations. I did a search here but with no luck. I have a Fake Book version that makes absolutely no sense at all.
I'm not really trying to find more to listen to, but maybe some nice changes that any of you use you may be willing to share. I will be singing this solo on an acoustic and with my band on the Tele (of course). Any help is appreciated! Have fun! |

The version by IZ is really cool. He's the hawaiian guy who plays it on Uke. His full name is Isreal K........... (Okay, I can't pronounce OR recall the spelling of his last name).
Anyway, he plays it in G or maybe D. Just 5 or 6 Chords. |

Original is in Eb.
Here is a basic yet concise version in 'A' ... Verse: | A F#m7 | C#m7 A7 | Bm7 E7 | A | | D Dm | A G7b5 (or F#m7) | Bm7 E7 | A (Esus) | Repeat those 8 bars. Bridge: | A | Bm7 E7 | A | A Esus | | A | Ebm (Ebø) Ab7 | C#m7 F#7 (C°7) | Bm7 E7 | Back to the top. *chords in parenthesis are alternates. There's a lot you can do with this tune ... or not. Check out Eva Cassidy's version ... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tVe_Wa-aV-M Simple but cool. |

As an 'aside' ...
I've played the stage show of 'wizard of oz' a few times.
In Eb, the actual written first chord of 'rainbow' is Aø (Am7b5 or Eb6 with 'A' in the bass). As mentioned in an old thread about verses and choruses ... the song that we know is the chorus or refrain. In the stage show version there's a verse (transition scene/segue) before it, and that Am7b5 chord is a little part of the musical 'tension' before you get the 'hook'. Some 'original' productions and cast recordings do it, some don't. *It's devilishly fun to lay that m7b5 on an unsuspecting singer (maybe just do it the second time around?). If they hit their note all's good. Last edited by klasaine; November 12th, 2009 at 10:58 PM.. |

I have a great time listening to that! I saw him do this and he said that people always ask him if doing all of those harmonics is hard. He just tells 'em that it's like trying to put the toothpaste back in the tube!!
