Train Bend - Jim Campilongo
Hi Folk, this guys playing drives me nuts, does anybody here know what chord that train whistle bend is? Don't have my guitar with me for a few days and it's driving me insane.
Incase the youtube widget doesn't show up: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gHVG4kDurtY#t=1m46s Last edited by mody; October 30th, 2009 at 08:53 AM. Reason: spell |

If you come down to the Living Room in NYC on almost any Monday night at 11pm you can ask Jim yourself

To play that lick, put your third finger on the third string, seventh fret. First finger on the second string, fifth fret, and also on the first string, fifth fret. Now, bend the third finger up a whole tone while striking all three simultaneously. You could 'cheat' and only use the first and third strings if you want to. Here's the kicker: You've got to be able to grab the tone control with your pinky, and swell the tone (start with it down, and turn it up full) when you strike the strings! Simple, huh?

Here's a good "Train Whistle" Bend:
In "E" Play the B String/8th. Fret and the High e String/7th Fret, simultaneously. Slightly Bend the B String/8th. Fret, while you hold the e String/7th. Fret steady (without Bending the e String). As far as Timing, there are a lot of small variations in how fast to execute the Bending. And you may find a few cool variations, as you work with it. Also, as mentioned with the video's Example: Volume Knob Swells can also add a nice touch. For a bigger sound, also give the Open Low E String a Pluck at the same time. Hope this helps. Keep on Chooglin'! |

So you have to bend the B string a semitone and the G string a semitone too?...while turning the tone knob. Great sound. Budda, did you steal that trick from the movie Crossroads (not the Britney Spears one, the Ralph Macchio one) like me?

Wow, this is so cool, thanks guys. Tone pot swells, that starts a new chapter in bend manipulation for me. I knew there was something to sending all pickup outputs raw to floor mounted guitar controls.
Tuuuuur, thanks for fixing the youtube link. Joe, bang on there with the tone knob thingy. Hey GR, you think you want more of us there? :) nvilletele, yeah, that too's probably a part to it. I use a simple ghia, lets see how far i get. Budda, sounds familiar, how you doing bro? Good one, 'train whistle', wonder what other tele tricks you guys got tucked away. dijos, awesome, it's a small world eh? That Campilongo guy is freaking amazing! |

Here's another couple of tricks I used at practice tonight. Both over "Folsom" again.
Train Whistle: Play the open G and B Strings, and bend the G String behind the Nut. And for the G to G# Sliding Note at the beginning of the Solo, the same Behind The Nut Bend on the G String. Only this time, Bend it a little more, up to G#. Follow with the Open B String, and then the B String/3rd. Fret. Ciao! |

The tone control on a strat is in the wrong place, why would they do that! My next build puts it' (ALL) on the floor.
Nice Budda, will try that today, simple enough to remember, thanks. GR, some day for a longer stay for sure, missing out on a lot of the action, well, youtube and modern commerce is a blessing! Feeling pretty smug this side for now ;) |
