Scotty Anderson - Red Hot Guitar

I'm watching this instructional vid for the first time. It seems almost all of his licks are double stops, and he has a very strange way of playing them where his thumb pick plays one string and his index fingernail plays the adjacent string. I kind of have the hang of it on down strokes, but doing upstrokes are another story. Has anyone tried this method? Also, he and Brent Mason both play exclusively with a thumb pick. I tried doing this for a little bit, but it's not for me. For doing Acoustic stuff, yeah, it's great, but not for Tele twangin'. Does anyone else play this way? Is it worth my time trying to master that technique?

Scotty seems very influenced by Danny Gatton, or maybe they were around equally long...what's the story there?

About the video...why is it that only half of the examples are tabbed out?? He'll be blazing away with no music on the screen and then an example number will pop up. I'm about 3/4 into the video, and I'm writing down all the on-screen tab into Guitar Pro, and I went ahead and transcribed by ear a handful of the licks that weren't written out. I'm just surprised they did it that way.

Comments, suggestions?

I have that video and every time I put it on to watch I pass out cold on the couch. I end up having to rewind and watch what I missed again and again. Congratulations getting 3/4 of the way through.

He is a fantastic guitar player, but like Danny Gatton a terrible teacher. In fact, Gatton looks like a Phd next to this guy. I would be surprised if he mumbles more than 50 words during the entire lesson. What he does say is "something like this..." or "sometimes I do this" or "I'm gonna play a bit and see what happens".

The production value of this video also leaves something to be desired: I could really do without having to watch a close up of his crotch for 60 minutes.

To answer your specific questions: I don't use a thumbpick. If you can, congratulations. I play with my fingers instead and I don't feel like I'm missing anything. I remember reading that Chet Atkins once said that if he had to learn guitar all over again he would start without a thumbpick. He said a thumb nail has a larger variety of tones and is more subtle.

I've never heard of anyone else using the Anderson approach of playing two adjacent strings together with thumbpick and index. That's something that he probably spent a lifetime developing and I don't feel like spending the time to copy it.

Others will tell to learn as many techniques as possible, that you will eventually apply everything that you absorb. I won't. There are so many things to learn, learning this technique is not high on my list of priorities.

I don't know the relationship between him and Gatton.

Why weren't all the licks tabbed out? They never are on any Hot Licks video. There's enough there to learn from. Also, it wasn't very structured and he didn't have a lot to say or share, he was just blowing licks and the producers probably transcribed what they thought was useful.

Sorry for being so negative, normally when I don't have anything nice to say I don't say anything. But I can't help it since I feel like I got ripped off with this DVD. No offense to anyone, I believe Anderson and Roth are members of this forum, but I believe that I'm entitled to my opinion after having paid my hard earned money for this.

I agree with most of the things you said. The production was a little lame with the split screen thing and hard to read on-screen notation. I didn't get ripped off, fortunately, because I watched it free at www.totalvid.com during my free trial. Excellent player, but yes, his teaching abilities are very weak. I don't learn much from, "here's one thing...umm...here's another". I watched Tal Farlow's video today, and it was even worse. He didn't even slow any of the licks down. However, when I said they didn't tab out all the licks, I didn't mean that they didn't write tab everytime he touched his guitar. I meant he would say, "here's the next example" and the words, "Example # __" would come up on the screen, but there wouldn't be any actual music. WTF?

On a lighter note I watched Johnny Hiland's "Chicken Pickin Guitar" and "Bluegrass Guitar", and he is without a doubt a super nice guy, very humble, and a very informative and well-structured teacher. No on-screen tab, but I went ahead and tabbed out all the examples into Guitar Pro. I did most of the licks for Scotty Anderson's vid, as well. Right now I'm watching Ronnie Earl's "Blues With Soul". Not bad, but it's pretty much stuff I know already.

Had you read my posts you'd see there is no book, just on-screen tab. As I've said before, I've tabbed out most of it. Maybe if you ask nicely...
