Fingers nearly all the time. I play a bit of classical and used to play bass early on, so fingers sort of feel more natural.
I guess in the end it depends on what sort of styles you play.

either way works for me, but four fingers and a thumb cover a lot of ground ... i think it opens up a lot more possibilities... to paraphrase Woody Allen "if you are bisexual, you double your chances for a date on Friday night ..." ideally, Danny Gatton's hybrid style is ideal, if you can pull it off !!!

Both.
For loudness - a pick.
For softness - good ol' thumb.

After 40 years of using a pick, I started to mess using fingers a few years back. Seem to get a better sound, and better for double stop, bends, etc

Both, depending.

To my understanding most pickless electric players still sometimes play with a pick when the tone "demands" it, people like Mark Knopfler, Jimmie Vaughan, etc.

I play fingerstyle a lot, especially on acoustic, but tend to use a pick more often on an electric. I just like the sharper attack better. On bass, though, I use my thumb. I never could get the hang of a pick with a four string.

No pics, unless the part really demands it.
