Fingers nearly all the time. I play a bit of classical and used to play bass early on, so fingers sort of feel more natural.
I guess in the end it depends on what sort of styles you play. |

either way works for me, but four fingers and a thumb cover a lot of ground ... i think it opens up a lot more possibilities... to paraphrase Woody Allen "if you are bisexual, you double your chances for a date on Friday night ..." ideally, Danny Gatton's hybrid style is ideal, if you can pull it off !!!

Both, depending.
To my understanding most pickless electric players still sometimes play with a pick when the tone "demands" it, people like Mark Knopfler, Jimmie Vaughan, etc.

Bass: fingers; thumb and fingers; thumb; pick and fingers; pick. Mandolin: pick. Banjo: Thumbpick and fingerpicks. Lap steel: Thumb and fingers. |
