"Blues with Brains" by Chuck D'Aliola
Downloaded this over the weekend and think it's the best $20 I've spent in a long time.
It's targeted at the player more then the theorist I guess is how I'd explain it. It features two blues; one minor and one Major, and Chuck talks about making simple changes to the pentatonic scale to get more out of (and more "out") your blues. Great relaxed teaching format; I enjoyed this as well as learned from it (and as much as I love Robben Ford and John Scofield, this is a better instructional for a numbnut like me). http://www.chuckdaloiamusic.com/

Hey Chuck,
Didn't realize you posted here as well, still really digging BWB. I hope to find the time to go with your Skype lessons. Bob

Yeah, I got this too. Great stuff!
For you guys who want to grab a little of that Robben/Larry/Chuck D'Aloia vibe, it's a true winner. Lots of great ways to jump start your playing, and get it out of a rut and in gear. |

Guys, before Chuck realizes this is priced too low, you really should download it.
if you have ever derailed jamming to The Thrill is Gone, you need the minor blues lesson. If you would like to get a Steely Dan type uptempo blues under you fingers, you need the mixolydian lesson. He won't hold your hand and you will need to work with this ( I keep TAB paper out to make notes), but I have stacks of TAB books that cost as much and taught me nothing. A tremendous value.

Yeah, for the guys (and Gals!) who are playing some already and want to get better at working with their Ears, this video is a great way to get better at Transcribing.
Chuck tells you what alterations are going on, and where he's changing things up. He also plays at a Tempo that is attainable. Also, you can see his hands most of the time. So, perfect for those who want to get better at Transcriptions, as well as play "Blues With Brains". And, by writing/tabbing this stuff out, you will gain a MUCH better handle on what is actually happening. Plus, you'll remember it more fully, more easily. Transcribing these Lines and Jams is a huge benefit, Guys. |

Here's more info. "Blues With Brains" is a 1 Hour and 15 min lesson with Chuck D'Aloia. The material is blues based using pentatonic scales and variations to deal with the chord changes. Chuck touch's on the 1/2-1 dim scale as well, again, approaching it with variations on pentatonic ideas. Throughout the lesson Chuck demos the ideas w/ play along tracks (the same tracks are included with the DVD) that open doors to more complex harmony without a lot of theory. The lesson concept's are strong on melodic content and connecting ideas with the aim at expanding blues based vocabulary. The physical DVD, reviews, downloads of the DVD, his "Mode Backtrax" play along mp3's and new CD, "Circle 7," are available at: http://www.chuckdaloiamusic.com/id2.html |

I purchased the lesson and finally had a chance to watch the complete lesson tonight. Good material, well done. I do wish there were some tabs of some of the licks (not necessarily every note) but I will keep trying to catch a few more each time I watch it.
