a blues in G? where's it used...
gotta admit, i'm not hearing that one as a I, IV or a V...is it a passing chord? context will affect how i'd name it...

----3----
----3---- ----3---- ----2---- ----3---- Your basic T-Bone chord. Hey...you may be right. I have a weird ear and sometimes the guys in the band(s) tell me that a chord sounds dissonant to them. Last time, it was this one, ---x---- ---x---- ---x--- ---3--- ---2--- ---3--- It just sounded like a G7 to me, but they told me to cut it out. Who knows...context is everything. I still think you can play any note in any key if you put it in the right place. |

I think what you 'mean' to play is this ...
----6---- ----5---- ----6---- ----5---- ----X---- ----X---- It's a diminished 7th chord, (either G, Db, E or Bb) you can use it in many places but I like either going FROM the IV chord (C7) or leading to the V chord (D). And yes, very T-Bone Walker. |

i normally don't like to alter the I chord too far, although, there's always exceptions.

I dunno about you guys, sounds like E diminished 7 to me... The B-note on the G string works because it's a natural harmonic overtone of the E... If you delete it, the chord still works the same. Besides, all tensions are available on a diminished chord, so you could call it Bb diminished-flat nine, or whatever... Listen to it, it sounds diminished, not dominant.

funny you say that, because 9 times out of 10 i hear a diminished chord as some kind of dominant sub. but i can certainly dig what you're getting at--it doesn't want to resolve to anything (at least to my ear) like a true dominant...
but chas says he was using it as a 1 chord, so that idea goes out the window... as for it being wrong, i dunno--i think you just got a hipper ear than me charlie!

Hipper!!
I doubt it.. Weirder, maybe. I use klasaine's chord, too, and that's where this one comes from. I'm not much on theory (Blues guy, y'know), but I figured that changing what I thought to be the "weird" note in that chord (C#) to the decidedly un-weird 3rd (B). I'll whip it out at rehearsal and see if the fellas balk. |

I'm totally down with 'forcing' a voicing to work. I personally love the #9 and natural 6th sound together (Bb and E).
In a jazz or funk context I'll use this ... ----6---- ----5---- ----4---- ----3---- ----X---- ----X---- I call that G13#9 Or, this one which is just a standard G7#9 and will definitely sound good as a '1' chord over a nastier G blues (major or minor) ... ----6---- ----6---- ----4---- ----5---- ----X---- ----X---- *it's the same voicing as the 'Hendrix' shape at the 10th fret* so is this only down L-O-W ... ----X---- ----x---- ----3---- ----3---- ----2---- ----3---- *this is a great one for copping a B3 type tone* |
