Being Don Rich----> Play his licks

I am proposing a workshop thread. We can all contribute and together we can work out the Don Rich licks we love and cherish. I suggest that we figure out Don Rich licks and post them here in tab and where needed we make recordings of the licks or make references to where the appear in songs.

Many of us know Don licks, but it would be cool to reposit them here so we could find them and also reduce what he is doing to make them moveable across many songs.

What do you think? I'll start some that I know and we can all add to them as we learn new stuff....

Great idea! I’m in..

And just as a thought, maybe blend in some of the easier stuff to pull in some new Don Rich fans.

Here's a few lessons I've made recently.

The common speed lick done by Don in songs such as Act Naturally (in the guitar solo) looks like this

------------------------------
-----------------------------
--4-2-0--------------------
------------4-2-0----------
-----------------------3-0----
------------------------------

Don also like to use bends that were a full step below the 4 chord. So in the Key of A it would form a C chord.

looks like this
-3---------3------------
-3b(5)r3--1------------
--------------2---------
------------------------
------------------------
------------------------

It was used on stuff like "My Heart Skips a Beat"

is it sacrilege to say here that most of Don's stuff is really simple? I think he was a great player and (more important, maybe) performer. His parts fit the music perfectly. But I don't think he spent a lot of time working on modes and scales. He just played some great-sounding simple Telecaster guitar.

I have tried note-for-note tabbing some Don Rich guitar leads; what struck me was how most of it could be played in open position with one finger on the left hand. True genius!!

More stuff

Full solo to "Act Naturally" (at least how they played it live)

The studio track wasn't much different

------------------------------------------------------------------------

------------------------------0------------------------0---------------

--0-0-0----------0-2h----------------3b-0----------------------------

Food for thought:

The Buckaroos rarely practiced. Don was very much against anything canned and believe in spontaneity and improvisation at all turns. If we could hear us gig two nights in a road, we wouldn't play the solos all the same. Neither did Don. One of the first Buck Owens Ranch Shows was recorded about a week before the Carnegie Hall Concert. Don plays the solos similarly, but does nothing the same, and they are quite different from the record. A good case for this is Love's Gonna Live. Completely different from the original and the Ranch and Concert recordings a slightly different.

Don had the core set of licks and played the Pentatonic Scale like no country guitar played before or since. I guess it's the job of this thread to familiarize ourselves with these licks.

Love's Gonna Live Here on the Buck Owens Ranch Show

The Tab is a little off, but pretty damn close...

---------------------------------------------3------------
------------------------------------1-3-3b(5)r3-1-------
----------0-2-0-2-0p-2--2-0-2--2----------------2-----
----------------------------------------------------------
--------0---------------0--------------------------------
-0-0-3---------------------------------------------------

--------------------------------------------------------------

--0----------------------------------------4-2-0-------------
----2-0-------------------2-0-2-2-0-2-2---------2----------
--------3-0-3-0-3-0---------------------------------0-------
----------------------3-0-------------------------------------

(I'm a little foggy on this bend)

-------3--1--3-------------------------------------------
--3b(5)-(hold)--(5)r3-1---7-7-8-7-5---------------------
---------------------------7-7-7-7-5---------------------
----------------------------------------------------------
----------------------------------------------------------

The next bit is a very fine pentatonic run

--10-8-5------------------------------------------------

---------------------------------3--0----------------------

Lerb, awesome. You are spot on... and the reason I thought this thread would be cool is that knowing that Don like to change it up, he still worked within his style for everything.. if we can distill his style, instead of all of us playing just like the record, we can internalize his style and incorporate it.

You are cranking on this! great job!

Thank for the encouragement fellas! Don Rich is my forte so to speak...

You know how Johnny Cash's guitarist, Luther Perkins, played the "Clickity Clack" on an Esquire during everything but the solos? They called it the "Boom-Chicka-Boom". Well what I'm posting now it Don's 'Boom-Chicka Boom"

The following tabs are (left to more) simple to complicated. They are for and A chord.

------------------------|----------------|----------------------
------------------------|----------------|----------------------
-2-0-2--2-0-2-(repeat)|--2-0-2--2-0-2-|--2----0----2------0-
------------------------|----------------|----0-2h------0-2h---
------------------------|-0------0-------|-0--------0-----------
------------------------|----------------|-----------------------

These 3 riffs and their variations and fills in between chord changes would fill the verses and chorus's of numbers such as "Act Naturally", "Love's Gonna Live", "My Heart Skips a Beat", and numerous others.

I recall reading a interview with Tom Brumley (Buckaroo Pedal Steel Player). He said that the reason that these licks were often missed live was because Don was concentrating on sing harmony with Buck (and sing he did!). Don asked Tom to fill in for him and these, and Tom wound up placing what I believe was low E on his steel to help out.

As far as the theory behind this, it's basically an octave jump that transforms into a augmented 7th chord with the addition of the 'G' to the still ringing 'A' string.

"Sam's Place" is another simple octave jump based off the Don's heavily used derivative of the Pentatonic Scale.

---5-------5-5-5---------10--------10-10-10-------------
-----5-8h--------5-8h------10-13h-----------10-13h-----
-----------------------------------------------------------
------------------------0----------------------------------
-0---------------------------------------------------------
-----------------------------------------------------------

----------------------------------------------------------
----------------------------------------------------------
----------2-0---------------------------------------------
-2-2-0-2-----2-0-----------------------------------------
-------------------3b-0-----------------------------------
----------------------------------------------------------

Oh course, one of the two was playing harmony on this one, but you get the point. Also that last lick is a very common pentatonic walkdown Don used in A so learn it!

Another little Tidbit...

During the late 60's on Heehaw, I saw Don do a turnaround on "My Heart Skips a Beat". It was a combination of a major and pentatonic minor scale.

(The X indicates a mute, in a Roy Nichols fashion, you know with yer fingers)

-----------------------------------------------------------------
-----------------------------------------------------------------
-----------------------------------------------------------------
-----------------------------------------------------------------
-4-5-6--7x7x7x--7--5x5x5x--5--4x4x4x--4--2x2x2x--2--0---
-----------------------------------------------------------------

--------------------------
--------------------------
---------2----------------
-------2---4-2-0---------
-2-4h------------3b-0---
--------------------------

See there's another derivative of that lick I was talking about earlier

Oh and I found the video, the turnaround starts at 0:59

One of my personal favorites is "Before you Go" another minor pentatonic in A. For the sake of space, I'm not going to write all the A notes because there's at least 50000 of them.

-5-5-5-3-2-0------------------------------------------------
---------------3-1-3-----------------------------------------
----------------------2-2-2-2-0--------------2-0------------
---------------------------------4-2-0------------2-0-------
----------------------------------------3b-0-----------3-0--
-------------------------------------------------------------

Follows the 'Blues version' of the pentatonic scale, for you beginners it looks like this at the 5th fret in the same key

---------------------------5-8--------------------------------
-----------------------5-8------------------------------------
-----------------5-7-8-----------------------------------------
------------5-7-----------------------------------------------
-----5-6-7-----------------------------------------------------
-5-8----------------------------------------------------------

Mmm, the Fuzztone on "Who's Gonna Mow Your Grass" a very simple intro and solo.

Intro

-------------------------------------
-------------------------------------
---2-1--------2-1-------------------
-------4----------4------------------
--2------2---2-----2----------------
-------------------------------------

Solo

------------------------------------------------------------
------------------------------------------------------------
------------------------------------------------------------
---------------3-2-----------------------------------------
--2-----5-2-------5-2-------2-0-------1-2-----------------
----0-4------------------0-4----2-0-2---------------------

Those last two notes are a little bit foggy, the first note if off a little from the last one which is a B and an Bb sounds about right now.

Most people forget that "My Heart Skips a Beat" is in the key of A yet the boys tuned down to Ab. Sometimes they'd just play in Ab and sometimes in A. Well here we go, tuned down to Ab whilst playing in the key of A

-----------------------------------------------------------
---------------------------------2-------------------------
------------3-1-3-3-1-3-3-1-3---3-1-3-3-1-3------------
-----------------------------------------------------------
----------1------------------------------------------------
-1-1-1-4--------------------------------------------------

(repeat bend a bunch)
------4------4---------------------------------------------
--2-4b(6)---2-----------2----4-2-------------------------
----------------3-3-1-3--3-3-----3-3-3-1----------------
--------------------------------------------3-1------------
-------------------------------------------------3-1-------
-----------------------------------------------------------

----------------------------------------------4-------------
-------------------------------------------4b(6)r4-2-------
------------------------------------------------------3-----
---------------------------------------1--------------------
-4-4-6-6-4-6-6-4-6-6-4-6-6-------3-----------------------
-------------------------------0-1h-------------------------

------------------------------------------------------------
------------------------------------------------------------
-3-----------------------------------------------------------
---3-1--------------------------------------------------------
--------4-1-------------1--------------------------------------
---------------1-1-1-4------------------------------------------

Really confusing, I'll put it in Ab soon enough.

The Love's Gonna Live Here studio cut is different and took me forever to get anywhere near what Don's playing. Your guitar needs to be in drop D to play properly.

Any clues to the typical Don Rich sound? Strings, pick ups, amp, settings etc?

Stock 60's Telecaster, so stock 60's pickups, Twin or Super Reverb amp, lotta treble and bass, less mids. In the early days Don used bigger strings, even as high as 13's maybe, later he started using Ernie Balls 9-42.

My favorite song that Don sings is Wham Bam. I'll provide a link to the live video and, of course, provide the tabs to the intro and solo of the live version.

Lerb's stuff is very helpful indeed. Good work Lerb21! I just spent a gray and rainy Holland Sunday afternoon playing along with Buck and Don CDs. If you get the hang of Lerb's tab, you have all you need to get going. Sometimes reading that tab is a little bit difficult, but stick with it and you will be rewarded.

And once you get the hang of it, you will realize the "beauty in simplicity" of the great Don Rich.

I have two suggestions:

If you have a spare guitar, tune all the strings down 2 frets (to D). Use a set of 12-54 (EXL145 Heavy in d'Addario catalog). This set will keep almost the same tension as a normal set so you shouldn't have to change the truss rod.

Get a decent capo. Buck usually played with the guitars tuned down 1 fret. Sometimes they were tuned down 2 frets. (Dwight Yoakum's fantastic interpretation of Buck's hits frequently uses 2-frets-down tuning.)

If you keep a guitar tuned down w/ a good capo handy, you can play along with Buck (and Dwight) without getting frustrated and having to re-tune all the time!

Great idea, I'm gonna try that!

Jodie! hey it's great to see you here... we had some fun picking a few country songs at the last NL jam. Maybe next time we'll do some Buck Owens tunes!

Lerb thanks for posting all this. I've been meaning to spend a little time studying up on some Don Rich and this is an excellent way to begin.

Great thread, Getbent... and great work by Lerb here!

When I first got interested in playing country music and trying to learn from records, I think the very first songs I sat down with were My Heart Skips A Beat and Ain't It Amazin' Gracie by Buck Owens... copying the licks as closely as possible.

I'm going to try to tab out some stuff later today if I get the chance.

I was listening to my Buck Owens cassette tape today, playin' along... Then I put on my new Dwight Sings Buck and I was reminded that Dwight's guitar man - Eddie Perez - does a fantastic job of capturing the Don Rich vibe. So y'all remember to check it out for further inspiration and education in the great Don Rich tradition.

Yeah, how about another Dutch jam sometime soon.
But this time STRICTLY COUNTRY!

OK, it's slow at work here at the moment... so here's a quick and simple Don Rich lick that's good to end a solo or end the song with. I think he plays this lick on the song Hangin' On to What I Got, but I wouldn't swear to it... I cant remember which song I actually learned it from. I think the double stops sound best when picked with the second and third fingers, using the pick for the single notes (~ means you slide one fret down).

Key of A:

----------------5----8~7----5--------5----7----5-------
-------5---7---------7~6----5---7---5----6----5--------
-----------------------------------------------------------
-----------------------------------------------------------
-----------------------------------------------------------
-----------------------------------------------------------

The only thing that gets me is the bends. For instance,

-----4------4--
--2-4b(6)---2- (On My Heat Skips a Beat)

-----4------
--4b(6)r4-2-

Can someone be kind enough to maybe tell me where to position my fingers or something? I can play all the rest of the things right except these little bends, that are difficult for me.

Thanks

look at this first...

-4-
-4b(6)

This indicates that you'll place two of your fingers (I use ring and pinkie) on the 4th fret on the E and B strings. The b indicates a bend. the (6) indicates your target note in that you'll bend the b string so that you'll actually be playing the note on the 6th fret.

Also the r seen after this indicates a return to the second fret.
