That takes me back to my younger days. I loved watching Hee Haw each Saturday evening, but always got annoyed when they put the corn-pone animation and laugh track over someone I really wanted to watch.

Still, one of the best outlets for country music on commercial TV ever. I learned to pick banjo and guitar by watching that show.

Buck's been playing the solo like that for years... you can see him do so on all the post Don live material. I'll take a stab at it while I'm dissecting "I Don't Care" this weekend.

made in japan revisited...

Hey,

I'm starting to play that tune in the band and my guess is that when Don played stuff he went for what was easy and fit under his hands and style and felt good....

it totally sounds like double stops to me... here is how I've been playing it.. see what you think... he slides down.. use just one finger until you get to the 5/6 and that leads to the bend.

-13-13-13-s10-10-10-s8-8-8-s5-5-5------------------

I'll do the rest if you like how it sounds.

I love the look Don show when he bricks a single note at the 0:32 mark, I'm sure he played it a million times by then. Now when I play it most of the notes sound like that one

Don Rich strings

I remember playing Don's sparkle Tele in Bucks studio while recording with the Buckeroo's. It was leaning against the drum booth. I picked it up and played it. The strings were heavy. I didn't use it because of that. I would have to agree with Mark. I took the strings off a yellow Tele of Don's. I saved them. And lost them unfortunately. Things happen when you get a divorce. I always thought the taper of his string bends were due to his heavy string guage. I love Tele's!

Hi -
So, I love this one (buckaroo)...but, how does one get the drum track? You know, the really simple pattern in the background there? Did you program it? Download it? I have an Alesis SR-16. It seems that kind of drum track would work for so many things. I need it!
:-)
Could someone make a .wav or .mp3 of it.
Thanks,
Scotty.

Act Naturally - I have been meaning to add this and I apologize if it has been said - I just went to the post's end so: Song is in G - but tune down a whole step and play as if you are in A - you will get that Don sound.

Waitin' in Your Welfare Line: Tough. That's all I can say. I did my best, but it's not quite exact. This is from the Carnegie Hall Concert.

Here's Buckaroo, I tabbed the whole thing by ear this afternoon, including the pedal steel solo transposed for guitar. The best I could do.

Hi Ron.
I just stumbled upon this thread this morning. It's awesome!
I don't read tab -but anything Don Rich, to me is great.
Over the years, I've figured out tons of his licks, and lately I've been getting down the pedal steel parts on my tele.
The pedal steel part in Buckaroo is a real neat little solo. Once you get it down, and you actually familiarize yourself with the odd positionings, it really falls into place nicely.
One of the great little tricks for simulating pedal steel on a guitar -as you know- is holding one note and simultaneously bending another.
Some of the ones in Buckaroo are cool little bends that I had to get creative with to get the sound down.
Try holding down the D string at the 12th fret w/your third finger, and simultaneously pulling the G string fretted in the 9th fret down a full tone while striking both.
Works in the key of D.
It's a bifferent way of looking at bends.
Along the same lines, is a lick I got from Roy Buchanan years ago. Works in any key, but the middle part of the neck is best, as the strings are easiest to bend:
Make an E chord, say, in the seventh fret. Pluck all three note at once, and simultaneously pull the G string down (Raising it's pitch) a semitone and release the bend so it goes back to it's initial note.
I know this stuff sounds weird, and maybe I'm not explaining it as clearly as possible, but it's a lot of fun figuring out and inventing new bends to get that pedal steel sound.
Maybe some day I'll get around to making a quick youtube vid of some of these fun licks!

Chaparral vid

I really want to transcribe this awesome Don Rich instrumental! It's like Buckaroo inside out! I have the recording, so that's cool.
But I was trying to find a vid of them playing it live. I did a search earlier today and, incredibly, found one on AOL Video. But, I stupidly didn't bookmark it.
Now I search again, including on the AOL vid site, and I can't find it! It doesn't seem to be on youtube either...
It was a sequence from the Buck Owens TV show. First they play Chaparral, then there's an odd sequence where Buck and his "chief wrangler" do a little pitch for a Buck Owens & Buckaroos booklet. Anybody seen that? Help!

I know it's on Megavid....

They got the year wrong in the title, it's 1968. Jerry Wiggins is now and drums, but Tom Brumley is still playing steel. You can also see that Doyle Holly returned to his normal spot on the bass.

Lerb21 - That's it, thanks! He plays it a little different than on the record...

So does anyone else hear flatwounds on those lower strings? Or are they just some heavy gauge?
Perhaps discussed ot death already, did they always tune to Eb?

thanks - will post when I finish.

my cheat on Chapparal is to play the Dsus figure on the open D string, then the G and B up at the 7th fret.

For me the hardest parts are letting the notes of that Em chord 'bloom' the way they should and getting those triads in the walk down from the II chord in the chorus to sound right.

No Problem

As far as the strings goes, they have been discussed to death (ba dum tsss).

Buck and Don were both using the ridiculously thick strings that existed in the early 60's. Buck used something like .012's or .013's up until he died. Don did not. Don was putting on light strings like .010's as early as mid to late 63'. When Ernie Ball came out with .009's Don jumped on em' as quick as possible. Thanks to the help of Jerry Brightman, I can safely say that Don, from the late 60's (we could say 68) to the end of his career used what today are Ernie Ball Hybrid Slinkies. Nickel Wound diameter .009, .011, .016, .026, .036, .046. You'll note the lower pitched strings are a bit heavier so Don could get a little more twang.

The only reason I don't use these is that (for me) they die after about an hour of being on the guitar, but before they die, they're EXCELLENT.

Don Rich to Be Awarded...

Don Rich (Ulrich) will posthumously receive the distinguished alumnus award from the alumni association at his alma mater, Olympia High School in Olympia, Washington, May 11, 2009. With the OHS class of 1959, Ulrich's prodigy musical skills and introduction to Buck Owens propelled him to national stardom with the Buckaroos. Anyone interested in Don's induction into the OHS Hall of Fame, or have memories of Don or perspectives about Don -- I welcome your posts, or phone call (360) 790-9138.

Here's how Don'd played Act Naturally when they did it in G in standard tuning in late 63'.

--------8-5-5-----3--5--5-5/3----------3h5---------------

And then here they are, doing the same thing in G. Don follows a similar path to 6 years earlier.

Code:
---------------------------------------------------------
---------------------------------------------------------
---------------------------------------------------------
-3h5-3-5-3----------------3-------------3-4-5------------
------------3h5-5-----3-5---5-3-----3h5------------------
-------------------3-5-----------6-3---------------------

It's hard to tell whether he plays two D's or hammers from the C to the D during the walk up at the end of the turnaround. Don's fingers are moving so fast that I can't tell the difference.

Figure out what suits you best.

Thanks lerb for all the priceless tabs you put in here.
And all the others too.
I have decided to do a "picking session" tomorrow morning, since I have new (very bright) D'Addario 9s on my Esquire and they sound sharp somehow. Not like Don, but very twangy.
And somehow that's good :-)
Well, what I wanna say is: Tomorrow morning I'll tune down and try out tab by tab.
Thanks a lot for making this thread such a wonderful place for Don research.

Well, you naturally have Tiger by the Tail.

Fallin' for You is also in E. The two are very similar musically.

Smooth Sailin' is in Eb, but fingered in E.

Here's the MP3: http://www.box.net/shared/ees9xe4v52

Buck and Don never really ventured much into E... those are the three that I could come up with off the top of my head... I'll dig a bit deeper.

Those'll get it. I've got to do Love's Going to Live Here and Act Naturally in E. Tiger by the Tail is perfect. And there it is in post 21.
Thanks, pal.

Ooow, Ooow. I just figured this out: I took my Eb tele to the office. I have my two stardard pitch gigging teles. I need another tele for here at the house tuned to Eb! I guess I could use the Carvin that I never take out of the case. No, no, it needs to be a Tele. I wonder if that MIM 60's classic that was on Craiglist the other day is still available?

From what I've watched of Don, he likes to use two or threepositions in E.

The first one is the straight E minor Pentatonic at the nut. Our old familiar shape.

The second on is off of a country bend, where you bend 7th fret of the B string up a whole step and play a B on the seventh fret of the E string. Don jumps around a bunch there.

The third position is one of the those bend a whole step below the IV chord.

It's the same 'formation' as the one above, except you move up to the tenth fret and bend the b string from there.

It's pretty hard to explain verbally, maybe I'll make a video of something.
