Speed Lick Revisited

In my incessant listening to the Carnegie Hall Concert, I told you guys how to do Don's 'Speed Lick' incorrectly. The was Don does it is actually rather difficult.

--------------------------------------------------------------------
--------------------------------------------------------------------
-4-p2-p0----------------------------------------------------------
-----------4-p2-p0------------------------------------------------
----------------------3-0------------------------------------------

All at 32nd note speed. Sheesh!

I believe that Leon Grizzard posted something similar to this before, if not the same thing...

Giving credit where credit is due....

Then there's the version of Love's Gonna Live Here on the Jimmy Dean Show

Even though Don only leaves the first three frets once, this is still hard to tab and comprehend, and I don't quite have it right. The positions are correct it's just that Don throws and juggles so many notes it's almost impossible to find them all!

Boys if I may say one thing, I've been doing my best to brush up my fiddling.

Cause I really suck, and I doubt I'll be able to do anything that Don could do.

I was inspired by that TV version of Love's Gonna Live Here and Lerbs transcription. I decided to try to tab it out for myself as my second attempt at transcribing, using Power Tab. It was fun, and it worked. Of course it is very similar to what Lerb already posted, with a few minor differences here and there.

I would be happy to show it here, but I don't know how to put a PowerTab in the message pane. Anyone know how to do that?

Interesting to see that when the song moves to D, Don moves up to the seventh fret, rather than moving up a string.

Don slides up to the 5th position (A-shape) D-chord because Don likes to keep it simple, especially when he's playing rhythm and singing, too.

This is a quintessential Don Rich lick - it appears in so many Buck Owens songs (Act Naturally, for one), and all over country music - you can really hear it good in "6 Days on the Road".

It's easy, it fits, and you can do it while playing live for TV and singing backup...

Continuing the Jimmy Dean bit, here's "My Heart Skips a Beat" on from that particular show. Please note: It's hard to cop those licks when they go at the blistering tempo, there's applause and background noise, and you can't slow the video down!

I don't claim that these tabs are correct, but I'm pretty sure the positions are right and the tab is probably 90% accurate. Even if the notes aren't the same, the spirit of Don still is!

It's also interesting to note that they play it in 'A' while being tuned to 'Ab'. Same as they did on the record!

I used a free-software program called Freecorder to capture the sound from the TV clip, then opened the mp3 file with Amazing Slowdowner, looped the solo one phrase at a time, and used the ASD EQ to remove as much bass and crowd noise as possible - and it was still difficult!

Ah it's nothing. Like all things, once you do it so much it become easier. Come to think of it, I never tabbed anything out before this thread appeared. It was the will of the guitar gods I suppose...

Speaking of this thread, I gotta get my rear in gear and diagnose my BRAND NEW BUCK OWENS RANCH DVDS.

See ya in about a month.

Congrats on the new DVD Lerb. I’m sitting here listening to my favorite Christmas present from this year, “Buck’s 21 #1 Hits, The Ultimate Collection”. Along with the CD, came a new "Hee Haw" tee shirt, all wrapped up pretty as only girls can do.

I suppose any girl that buys me a Hee Haw shirt and a Buck CD I’ll be keeping her around for a bit.

Thanks again for the awesome posts Lerb. Hope you have an awesome New Year and that someday you’ll cruise town in an old Caddy with horns on the hood and a tele in the back seat.

Here we go...

Here is the intro to "Open up your Heart" by Buck and Buckaroos. Don bends like hell on these notes, so it makes things a bit harder to diagnose, but I got most of the notes right at least. The positions sounds about right too.

---------------------------------------------------------------
---------------------17-19-17--------------------------------

-16b(18)(18)-14-12b(14)(14)--10b-xxx-10b-xxx-12-xxx-----
-----------------------------------------------------------------
-----------------------------------------------------------------

Please tell me if you see any error in the tabs.

The whole intro is based off of an Ab bend.

Turn on your dvd or just watch it on youtube and watch Don's fingers whenever he is playing and you can see him hit the 757 notes and the bends on 2nd and 4th.

It doesn't match up with my ear, hence the discrepancy.

I'll check it again.

Yup I got it now, he hits the 7th fret on the B, not the G string.

Check it, it sounds about right.

This guy's bends are so relaxed and soulful(all two of them!), and his right hand is really relaxed as well, This is a quality I've always admired in Roy Nichol's playing as well,,,,,many, many hours at the wheel through the years

Satan's Gotta Get Along Without Me is a fine edition to this thread, and has sparked a show idea for my band ,West of Hell...we are going to do an 'all satan' show featuring classics such as this one, lplus some LOuvin Bros. and do a bunch of rewrites of our own tunes that'll feature ol' satan's themes...PM me if anybody has any suggestions, thanks again Lerb and Getbent, one of the greatest threads I've had the pleasure to step into...

Most of it is Don's usual Pentatonic Playing with that bend below the IV chord. Theres a little major run at the end. Stick to the 5th fret pentatonic box for the second half of the solo.
