"Cry Me A River" by Julie London w/Barney Kessel

Does anyone have the voicings for the chords Barney Kessel plays on Julie London's "Cry me a River?" Especially the haunting intro. I would love at least a head start. Whoever has them, I'd be happy to pay them back by posting the EXACT voicings Dave Wright used on the Troggs' "Wild Thing."

Cry me an intro

Anytime you hear that dissonant "cluster" sound, there's a good chance there's a minor 2nd or a major 7th involved (or both!). Barney's playing a cool version of a minor 9th, with the 9th right next to the minor 3rd, then walking the 9th down to the major 7, to get a minor/major 7th.

First it's Emin9 to Emin/maj7, then Amin9 to Amin/maj7, using the same fingering both times. Starts with a little finger stretch, and let both the open bass note and two top notes ring as long as possible:

------------------
----12-(ring)-12
----12-(ring)-12
----16-15-14-13
------------------
--0--(let ring---)

-----------------
-----5-(ring)-5-
-----5-(ring)-5-
-----9--8--7--6-
--0--(let ring)--
-----------------

Then C7#11 (with 5 and then 9 in the melody) resolving to B7b5:

---------------10--8--7
--8----8----8----------6
--9---------9----------8
--8---------8----------7
--9---------9-----------
--8---------8----------7 (with thumb)

Can you say "dissonance?" I knew you could... ;-) CS

P.S. Hang onto the Troggs voicings for now – you can just send me one of your fine camping lanterns instead. ;-)

Thanks my man. I've already played it about fifty times this morning. Wait, Wait...okay, now it's fifty-one. Seems simple enough now in hindsight, though I'm still trying to train my ear to pick out jazz chord melody by ear.

Hey, Chris--Nice Job!

Your tab inspired me to go find that cd (buried in the stack somewhere) and DO THE TUNE!

Very cool, indeed--thanks!

Anybody else inspired by this thread to do a Gatton/Buchanan-esque Tele version of this tune? :D

Don't get me wrong, I LOVE the Julie London version, but it's like I can hear it in my head. I wonder how that intro would sound with a bright Tele tone?

Jeff Beck and Lulu

In the Mike Figgis segment of the Martin Scorcese Blues series, Jeff Beck plays what sounds to me like the Barney Kessel intro to 'Cry...' as well as a nice melodic solo. It's a strat though.
