Alan Jackson's "Little Man"; Brent Mason's tuning?
Anyone play this? Was jamming with my buddy Danny and we couldn't get some of the low riffs.
We (well, alright, Danny) came to the conclusion that Brent Mason must be tuned to Eb and then the low E to C#. We ran out of time before we'd nailed it. Anyone? Mr Mason, Sir? Thanks in advance. Peter

brent stuff
hmmm... well only he could answer for sure but, it sounds more to me like he's using a tic-tac bass to get some of the licks and then over-dubbed his guitar with it .... or used a really accurate harmonizer, i just dont think he's using guitar for those low growling licks you're hearing.....
just a guess twang' on, jerry |

Sorry we didn't see this sooner - we never come on this page
Brent told me that Alan Jackson started off trying to do that song in D and he said it was a little high for him and Brent already had his low E string tuned down to D so he just retuned the guitar down a half step making the low string a C sharp. Since he uses a 44 gauge string for his low E string, it stayed in pretty good tune.
Hope this helps ya'll. He recorded that song in l998, so it's been a while -- He didn't use a baritone, as benderking said above, it's all telecaster. Brent didn 't get his Jerry Jones Baritone until Christmas of 2002 (I gave it to him). |
