Slow down and stay in pitch....software?
Hopefully, this is the correct place for this question. It's mainly "practice" oriented, so I put it here.
Anyone know of a good, free program to slow down mp3's and keep them in pitch? Thanks, Bill |

if you are willing to spend a small amount you can get the Amazing Slowdowner. This program has been discussed many times here, and most users (including myself) seem to think it's very helpful.
It will play mp3s or CD tracks; you can slow the music down to any speed without changing the pitch, even ridiculously slow - and you can speed up too, if you should ever need that; you can change the pitch if you want to, independent of the speed settings; you can let the 'tape' loop over any part of the song you like, so you can keep it repeating a note, or a phrase, or a chorus as long as you need to work it out. there are several other features, such as EQ and center-cancel to minimize vocals. it's not free, but at $49.95 I think it's worth the cost; there is a free trial version available for download...check out the website: http://www.ronimusic.com/ |

I've been happy with 7th String Software's Transcribe Program. I've converted many former Slowdowner users... It's got a 30-day free trial. Check it out.
http://www.seventhstring.com/ $50, but worth it, in my opinion. |

JetAudio will do it and it's free. It's actually my favorite program for listening to music.

The thing I like best about Transcribe! is the pitch adjustment feature. You can pitch-shift songs to the keys that work best for your particular ears/fingers/guitar tuning.
E.g., Tune Jimi and SRV up to E standard, or tune Bb down to A, F up to G, Gm up to Am, etc. It's like a capo you can put on a whole tune. The pitch shift works in halfsteps or in cents. You can tune in halfsteps up or down a 5th, and you can tune in micro-cents, 100 per half-step. For recordings that aren't necessarily tuned to concert pitch, this is a lifesaver. Many times I've had to transcribe recordings that were something odd like 42 cents between two concert pitches... Transcribe! lets you quickly and easily retune the song to concert pitch, so you don't have to retune your guitar. Another thing I like about Transcribe! is that you can slow to a percentage of the original speed, you're not limited to only "common speeds". E.g., Lately I've been transcribing a lot of songs at 80% tempo. 80% is slow enough that I usually have time to scribble the notes, but it speeds up the process so I can transcribe more bars in less time. 30% more... I've only met a few people who can transcribe complex parts in real-time, and I doubt I'll ever be one of them... But with Transcribe!, at least I'm getting better at it! I'd like to hear about other programs that combine the retune/pitch-shift feature with a variable tempo control. |

For Winamp, you can get the Roni Music Slow Me Down plug-in off the Winamp website.
But more useful yet, in my opinion, is the AnalogX vocal remover (Also available off the Winamp plug in list). The human voice is much more of an obstacle than song speed in my opinion.

Transcribe!
Here's another vote for Transcribe! It is so easy to mark a section and loop it. It is also good for easily isolating a single note and getting the pitch. It's free for the 30 day trial, but it costs $50.00. Worth it to me.
