Elvis - "I Was The One" chords?

I'm trying to work up a version of this fine song, but I keep getting stuck on the last chord of the third line:

........C................C aug.....F...................?
and you know the way she touches your cheek

I'm doing it in C; I have found some acceptable chords, such as the diminished chord at the 4th fret, or a D w/ F# bass; but I wonder do any of you have a better idea?

Please don't tell me letters and numbers - I can't really get to grips with that. I would appreciate it if you could tell me position and fingering. It's the voicing of the chord that's getting me.

I looked up tabs, but you all probably know the problem w/ tabs. One guy posted an incorrect tab 10 years ago, and every single tab site re-posts it.

I'm not sure what it's called, but I think it's a dim-chord.

One way to play it is with a barrč chord in 2nd fret - like a B7 with middle finger on the A-string, 3rd fret (C), like this: 234242 (barred in 2nd fret).

OK,
index finger bar 2nd fret,
middle finger on A-string, 3rd fret
ring finger on D-string, 4th fret
little finger on B-string, 4th fret

Hope I'm making myself clear - at least it's the right chord ..... I guess it's the same as your dim-chord in 4th fret, only played differently, with a F# in the bass.

Great song BTW. You should also give "I Want You, I Need You, I Love You" a try. They have a lot in common, but it's still a challenge.

thanks for the chord Telemarkman. It works well.

I watched a tape of Scotty playing this at a fan festival in England, and he does something like this for the 4-chord sequence:

x x 10 9 8 8 (C)
x x 10 9 9 8 (C+)
x x 10 10 10 8 (F)
x x 10 11 10 8 (mystery chord)

it sounds really nice, but it's a little difficult to squeeze all my fingers in way up there on the neck.

I'm gonna try the other one today ("I Want You, I Need You, I Love You" ).

It's actually the same dim-chord, only played another way. Fits best within a band setting I guess - my way is better alone (with the bass note and all ...).
And yeah, you don't have a lot of space for your fingers up there ...

aha, I tracked down the chord name - it appears to be F# dim7; I'm not too good with the names, I just play what sounds good. But at least now I can tell people I know how to play F#dim7.

yes, when I work on a new song I usually try to figure out (at least) two ways to play it - one way if I'm alone and one for in a group... and maybe a few others too if I can.
