Ever listen to Dick Dale?...or pretty much any surf band from that era, for that matter... that's the sound of flatwound strings on a Strat. Dick Dale has an AWESOME sound...he still uses very heavy flatwounds...the low E is a 64.
Leo Fender insisted that all Fender guitars come out of the factory with heavy guage flatwound strings...that's the way he wanted them to sound! Eldon Shamblin, the lead guitarist for Bob Wills also used a Strat with flatwounds from the early 50s until he died. |

If I remember correctly back in the late 50's and early 60's flatwounds were considered the electric guitar strings..I think at that time everyone used them..I don't remember the gauges..I think at that time it was Lite, medium , and heavy...And the names I remember were..Mapes, Black Diamond, Goldtone, La Bella..

Always
I use the D'Addario Chromes on my Casino and my Strat, and when I had a Tele on there as well.

First few years I played (mid 60's) everybody in my circle used flatwounds.
I got an acoustic guitar and from that point on, nothing but round wounds. You could try D'Addario half rounds, much less noise, even in bigger guages and with bigger frets. I have a set of 10-46s on a Strat, only bad thing is they smell funny. Bubbanov Oh, also some creaking at the nut when tuning. (the smell is almost gone, btw) Last edited by boris bubbanov; December 31st, 2007 at 11:49 AM. |
